Drawing of proposed Shir Shalom building.

Shir Shalom To Present
Site Plan To Township

SUSAN GRANT

Staff Writer

I

f someone would have
told Rabbi Dannel
Schwartz three years ago
that Temple Shir Shalom
would be large enough to
build a 30,000-square-foot
home, Rabbi Schwartz ad-
mits he would have laughed
at them.
But now he's anticipating
a Feb. 12 preliminary
meeting with the West
Bloomfield Township Plann-
ing Commission where the
temple will present a site
plan for its proposed new
building. It's the first step
toward gaining the township
approval necessary before
construction.
Last July, -the temple,
which has grown from 30
members to 550 members in
the past few years, signed an
agreement to purchase
almost 8.5 acres at the
southeast corner of Orchard
Lake and Walnut Lake
roads for $675,000. A vacant
farm house and a small
home are now located on the
site.
Temple members are con-
cerned about getting
township support after the
township almost denied
Congregation B'nai Moshe's
plans to build a synagogue
on Drake Road last year. But
Alan Rothfeder, the temple's
building site committee
chairman, said he is
"optimistic."
The temple, which now
rents a 9,000-square-foot of-
fice on Maple Road, east of
Orchard Lake Road, plans to
build its new facility in two
phases, totaling almost
45,000 square feet, Mr.
Rothfeder said. The building

is expected to cost $3.5 mill-
ion for phase one and an ad-
ditional $1.5 million for
phase two.
The drawings, done by
architectural firm,
Neumann-Smith and .Asso-
ciates, show a two-story cir-
cular design with the main
sanctuary in the center. The
eight-row sanctuary will
seat 350 people, but can be
expanded for Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur
use. A social hall can be used
by more than 350 people for
weddings and b'nai mitzvah
celebrations.
Phase one also includes
eight classrooms on the se-
cond story, just above the.
main sanctuary. During the
High Holy Days, those
classroom walls can slide
back and become part of the
sanctuary.
Although the classroom
space will not be large
enough for all students
enrolled in the temple's
Sunday school program, it is
more economically feasible
to rent space in a public
school building for a few
years than build new
classrooms immediately,
Rabbi Schwartz said. An ad-
ditional 11 classrooms and
administrative offices,
totaling almost 15,000
square feet, will be built as
part of phase two.
Other building features
include a library, elevator,
brides' room and gift shop.
Rabbi Schwartz would like
to begin building by July
and be in the facility by
September 1992. But he
knows that depends on the
temple's own fund-raising
drive and how soon West
Bloomfield township offi-
cials approve the site
plan. ID
