Swap Angers
Belgian Jews

Brussels (JTA) — Most
representatives of the
Belgian Jewish community
are outraged by the govern-
ment's announcement that a
Palestinian terrorist im-
prisoned for murdering a
Jewish child in Antwerp 10
years ago will be exchanged
for four Belgian hostages.
The Central Jewish Con-
sistory, the highest religious
authority of Belgian Jews,
expressed regret at the an-
nouncement Jan. 10 and
warned in a statement to the
news media that "human
rights and everyone's securi-
ty are the losers when
democracy gives in to terror-
ism."
But Lazar Perez, head of
the Coordinating Committee
of Belgian Jewish Organiza-
tions, declined to comment
on the issue, saying it was
"too sensitive."
And some Jewish leaders
said privately that they
would not oppose a decision
by the government.
But most are angered, es-
pecially by the fact that the
deal was brokered by Col.
Moammar Qaddafi, a
longtime supporter of Pales-
tinian terrorists who
extracted a Belgian-Libyan
economic agreement for his
troubles.
The Belgian Foreign Min-
istry announced Jan. 10 the
imminent release of four
members of the Houtekins
family, who were among
eight Belgian and French
nationals kidnapped at sea
in November 1987 by ter-
rorists of the Fatah Revolu-
tionary Council, better
known as the Abu Nidal
gang.
The Belgian authorities
will simultaneously free
Said Nasser, a Palestinian
originally sentenced to life
imprisonment for a June
1980 grenade attack on a
bus boarding Jewish
youngsters for a religious
summer camp outside the
Agudat Israel offices in
Antwerp.
David Kohane, 14, of
France was killed, and
several other boys were
wounded.
Said Nasser's life sentence
was eventually reduced to 30
years. As of last July, he had
served a third of it, which
made him eligible for parole
under Belgian law.
Mr. Nasser reportedly is
unrepentant. He claims to
have attacked the bus to
avenge the deaths of Pales-
tinian children at the hands
of the Israelis.
