International Association of Assessing Officers. He will
become president on Oct. 23, 1991, at the worldwide
annual conference.
PHILOSOPHY: "Being able to represent government and
being face to face with the public." Mr. Beren enjoys
working with people at a local level and adds that you
may not get the answer you want, but you will get an
answer.
BACKGROUND: Ernie Beren was born in Detroit but
moved to Flint when he was 2 years old. His father,
David, was in the grocery business, while his mother,
Doris, was a homemaker.
While growing up in Flint, he attended Hebrew
school, completed his bar mitzvah and belonged to
AZA. He was graduated from Flint's Northern High
School in 1950.
When he was 19 years old, he promised a friend he
would enlist in the Navy. He served from 1952-1956 in
the U.S. Mine Force, Atlantic Fleet.
"The military was a very important factor in my
life. It made a mensch out of me and provided me with
an education — the G.I. bill."
While Mr. Beren was in the military, a high school
friend suggested he become pen pals with her college
