Cashing proved a fitting
climax to the 1990 season
because he had failed to cash
at three other pro tourneys
— Battle Creek, Hammond,
Ind., and the Showboat,
where he suffered a pre-
tourney back injury that had
him wearing a back-brace
during the competition.
The injury laid him up and
made him decide not to com-
pete unless he was physical-
ly ready. But did Fort Pierce
leave him feeling he "could
compete with the best"?
"I haven't really proven
it," he acknowledged. "But I
have cashed twice, which
means I'm competitive. To
truly be among the top, you
have to get into the top 24
and cash. But in my mind, I
feel if you cash, you are in
the top-rank of bowlers."
Besides cashing,
Horowitz's goals are to be
among the top 24 consistent-
ly, to reach the top five in
the tourneys and be on tele-
vision —and to win a
tourney.
Cashing at Fort Pierce did
exempt him from having to
qualify in the San Diego
tourney in March. He also
plans to enter the San Fran-
cisco tourney that month
and also is scheduling
himself for Hammond,
Battle Creek, Fort Pierce
and the Seniors Champion-
ship at Canton.
"There's only so much
time I can take off from
work," Horowitz said. "But
if I at least make expenses, I
feel I can keep going."
If nothing else, being on
the tour has let Horowitz rub
shoulders with the game's
greats, bowlers like Earl An-
thony, Teata Semiz, Jimmy
Certain, Dick Weber and
Dave Soutar.
Seeing Soutar was espe-
cially significant for
Horowitz because he bowled
with Soutar when both were
teenagers in the old Detroit
News Teen Masters League
all those years ago.
"He didn't remember me,
but his eyes lit up when I
mentioned the News
league," said Horowitz. El
