What's Hot In The
1991 Models
You don't normally expect
exciting things from auto
manufacturers in years that
end with the number "1."
They usually time their best
tricks to fall on what most
people consider the first year
of the new decade.
But while it's true that
1990 was a very good year for
people who enjoy watching
the new cars come out, the car
companies also saved up a few
new things to share with us
in 1991.
Some trends continue to
gain momentum, and others
have been deflected in other
directions. The promise of
really inexpensive new
foreign cars seems to have
gone the way of the Yugo.
GM's courageous foray into
the world of outer space
minivans has met with
cautious approval, but
Nissan's five-door Axxess
went down in flames, and
most of the other makes seem
to have decided on mere
cosmetic changes.
The new generation of mus-
cle cars is still with us at least
one addition. We're also see-
ing a return to the small
roadster — an interesting
development for those of us
who like exciting cars but
don't have all that money or
need all that horsepower.
Let's have a look at a few of
the 1991 offerings.
DODGE STEALTH R/T
Chrysler Corp. has stolen a
page from the Japanese
guidebook on successful new
cars and is about to release a
hot new coupe loaded with
high-tech toys. The Dodge
Stealth looks remarkably like
the Toyota MR-2 and Acura
NS-X, both also new for 1991.
That shouldn't be too surpris-
ing since it was designed by
Mitsubishi, which will be pro-
ducing its own version.
The Stealth continues the
horsepower wars with a
300-horse twin-turbo V-6 and
a claimed 0-to-60 time of 5.4
seconds. It will be a
technological showpiece with
four-wheel drive, four-wheel
steering, computer-controlled
spoilers, ABS brakes and elec-
tronic variable suspension in
addition to the gee-whiz
engine. Of course all that
silicon costs money, and you
can expect this particular
assortment to run at least
$25,000.
MERCURY CAPRI
Ford Motor Co.'s timing for
the release of this swooshy lit-
tle front-wheel-drive roadster
is unfortunate, coming as it
does on the heels of the Maz-
da Miata, which made such a
splash last year. People will
say the Capri was rushed in-
to market as an answer to the
Miata, and that's not true at
all.
Indeed, Ford of Australia
has been working on this car
for years. It appears they've
learned that a new car rush-
ed in before it's ready is worse
than no new car at all. But
the decision to hold off on the
Capri made it seem like a me-
too instead of the first new
roadster on the market.
Anyone who looks past that
will find that this cushy, twin-
turbo droptop offers a lot
more power and performance,
though not the head-turning
body style, for about the same
price.
INFINITI G20
For anybody who has been
dying to own one of the new
luxury cars from Japan but
couldn't get past the
$30,000-plus price tag, there's
good news. The G20 is a new
compact sport-luxury sedan,
target priced at less than
$20,000. It's supposed to offer
impressive performance from
its 2-liter, 16-valve engine. It
doesn't have big chrome door
handles, though.
FORD ESCORT
The Escort was the best-
selling car of the '80s, which
is ironic since to hear people
talk it was also the most
despised. Acceptable only as
an entry-level commuter, the
Escort's bumps, buzzes and
rattles were more reminiscent
of its most ancient ancestor
than of the Asian econoboxes
it was supposed to compete
with, and by the end of the
decade it clearly had reached
the end of its road.
The new Escort has been a
long time in development. It
bears a superficial
resemblance to its
predecessor, but in this case,
ugly is only skin deep. The
car is a collaboration between
Ford and Mazda, as are some
of the best cars coming from
Ford these days.
Although the heirs of Enzo
Ferrari probably won't lose
any sleep, you'll find a lot
more performance from the
1.9-liter engine than in years
past. The cars are primarily
designed for economy and
ease of maintenance, and they
seem to have scored well on
those marks. If you've looking
for a first car, it's worth a se-
cond look.
