ences, would write Tsivya
150 letters. The letters, kept
in a shopping bag, were all
Tsivya had of her beloved.
"If we are not together, I
don't want to live at all," he
wrote.
"Don't worry; everything
will be okay," the doctor
would write back. "We'll be
together again."
Tsivya learned the only
way she could see her hus-
band, albeit briefly, was to
invite him for a month's
visit. In the meantime,
Isreil's children decided to
move to Israel.
Isreil realized he might not
see his son, daughter-in-law
and two teen-age grand-
daughters again soon, but he
chose the month with
Tsivya.
She sent him the papers,
and Isreil applied immedi-
ately for a visitor's visa.
Isreil left almost every-
thing behind in Baku, corn-
ing to New York with two
small suitcases of seasonal
clothing and $370 in
exchange money.
He also brought a wedding
ring. When he arrived,
Soviet friends in the Big Ap-
ple whisked Isreil and
Tsivya off to a justice of the
peace, where they finally
became legally married.
Through the Jewish Fami-
ly Service's Resettlement
Service, Tsivya has applied
for her legal permanent
resident (green) card, after
which Isreil can apply for
his, as a family member.
Isreil has received clothing
through the JFS warehouse;
his guest privileges at her
apartment have been ex-
tended and the couple is stu-
dying English.
It has been a long journey
for Dr. Tsivya Shapiro.
As a young girl, she wat-
ched her father wear his
tallis and daven. He taught
her about Shabbat, holidays
and traditions and Yiddish,
but also that for believing in
and doing these things, Jews
could suffer beatings.
Tsivya is struck by the
irony that she worked 40
years in the Soviet Union for
a meager pension of 130
rubles a month, but now
receives assistance in
America, where she never
worked.
"America is very warm,"
she said. "It hugs us like a
mother."
And then there is Isreil.
"Tsivya is the typical pic-
ture of the Soviet woman:
strong and hard," says San-
dy Hyman, director of the
Resettlement Service. "But
when Isreil says he loves
her, she blushes like a 21-
year-old." ❑
