cation, Mina and Theodore
Bargman Scholar-In-Resi-
dence Program and the Jean
and Samuel Frankel Center
for Judaic Studies of the Uni-
versity of Michigan will offer
college credit course for high
school seniors and young
adults called "English 280:
The State and City in Yiddish
and American Literature."
High school seniors com-
pleting the course will receive
three college credits from the
University of Michigan which
are transferrable to other col-
leges and universities.
The course will be taught
by Dr. Anita Norich, assistant
professor of Yiddish and
English Literature, Universi-
ty of Michigan. Professor
Norich received her Ph.D. in
English literature at Colum-
bia University and was a
fellow in Yiddish literature at
YIVO Institute for Jewish
Research.
Dr. Norich will discuss the
literary treatment of the
movement from shtetl to city
in Jewish fiction. Reading
Yiddish texts in English
translation as well as works
written in English in

America, students will follow
the movement of Jews within
Eastern Europe and
westward to the United
States.
The course will meet for 15
weeks on Thursdays, beginn-
ing Jan. 10 from 3:30-6:30
p.m. at the United Hebrew
Schools building. There is a

Adat Shalom Plans
Consecration Service

First graders from the Adat
Shalom branch of United
Hebrew Schools and Hillel
Day School will be honored at
consecration services at Adat
Shalom synagogue Dec. 15.
The youngsters will be call-
ed to the bimah and greeted
by Rabbis Efry Spectre and
Elliot Pachter, Cantor Larry
Vieder, AJE Principal Bea
Kriechman and Hillel Head-
master, Mark Smiley. The
children will present a short
program of songs and will
receive a gift from the
synagogue. A kiddush in
honor of the youngsters will
follow.
