overran a defenseless
neighbor and who went
against his own people,"
Senator Shelby emphasized.
Mr. Shelby was one of 52
senators who urged the Bush
administration not to link
the Gulf crisis with settling
the dispute between Israel
and the Palestinians in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Turning to the nuts and
bolts of grassroots activism,
speakers on three panels
warned of the sophisticated
tactics being used by Arab
Americans and other anti-
Israel supporters in their
efforts to weaken the bond
between America and Israel.
Urging vigilant reading of
local, national, professional
and campus newspapers and
similar attention to broad-
cast media, Andrea Levin,
director of Committee for
Accuracy in Middle East
Reporting in America
(CAMERA), stated that her
organization is having an
impact. "Silence never
works," she said, in calling
for continuing public reac-
tion to the media through
phone calls and letters.
Eric Breindel, editorial
page editor of the New York
Post, reported that when his
newspaper receives 20
letters containing informa-
tion or proof that a story or
column is biased against
Israel, some will get printed.
"This will alert the paper
that people are watching. It
makes sense. You should do
it," he said.
Congressman Edward
Markey from the 7th district
in Massachusetts pointed
out that we owe the Israelis
a debt of gratitude for warm
ing us of the spread of
nuclear arms in the region
and added, "The only thing
countries in the Arab world
share is hatred of Israel."
"We aren't over there for
Israel, but because Hussein
sits astride the oil supply
with nuclear weapons and
the sixth largest army in the
world," Mr. Markey con-
tinued.
Also speaking at the con-
ference were Senator Tim
Worth (D- Colo.), and Consul
General of the State of Israel
to New England, Yaacov
Levy. The conference was
planned by AIPAC and the
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Advisory Council,
CAMERA, ADL, and the Bos-
ton Chapter of Hadassah.
Conference co-chair Steve
Grossman called it "A model
for the future, that can be re-
peated across the country." ❑
