embers of Congress
and experts on the
Middle East reaf-
firmed the power of
grassroots political action
and issued a "wake up call"
to the American Jewish
community at a pro-Israel
Policy conference in Boston
last Sunday.
Before a crowd of more
than 700 people from
Massachusetts and Rhode
Island, speaker after
speaker gave assurances of
unwavering Congressional
support for Israel and, call-
ing for Jewish activists to
"broaden and deepen our in-
fluence," they denounced
the Bush administration for
distancing itself from "the
only ally in the Middle East
we can count on — Israel."
Thomas A. Dine, executive
director of American Israel
Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC), told the overflow
audience that in a year when
media stories of U.S.-Israel
tensions have regularly
made the front page of
American newspapers and
"stories that reaffirm the
friendship of the two coun-
tries are buried, Congress
has not strayed from its
course. Its members. take
Saddam Hussein's threats to
Israel very seriously."
Pointing to "remarkable
advances" in U.S.-Israel re-
lations in Congress during
1990, Mr. Dine cited gains in
pro-Israel support in both
the Senate and House. Three
Senate votes that over-
whelmingly favored Israel
included a 75-1 vote against
Senator Dole's (R-Kansas)
attempt to reduce foreign aid
by five percent to the five top
recipients of U.S. foreign
aid, including Israel.
"In election after election,
Americans continually
choose more pro-Israel can-
didates," Mr. Dine pointed
out. In 1990, he said, Ameri-
can voters repudiated the
challenges of senatorial can-
didates to three "friends of
Israel" in the Senate, name-
ly Paul Simon (D- Ill.), Bill
Bradley (D-N.J.), and Bennet
Johnson, (D- La.)
"This is proof that political
action works," Mr. Dine
said. The growing coalition
of pro-Israel support on
Capitol Hill is tied to action
by "inspired citizen ad-
vocates. When we act, our
efforts are rewarded," he
claimed.
Calling for citizens to ex-
ercise their full constitu-
tional right by participating
actively in the American po-
litical process, Mr. Dine said
"grassroots involvement is
where the votes are really
lost or won.,The American
Jewish community makes
widely known candidates'
records and positions con-
cerning Israel," he said.
"This is a watershed time
for Israel and world Jewry,
comparable to World War II,
to the frightening times of
1967 and 1972," said Har-,
yard Law Professor Alan
Dershowitz in a highly
charged address at the close
of the conference.
"As Americans we know
we can count on Israel at all
times. That strategic alli-
ance is worth its weight in
gold and oil," he said.
Mr. Dershowitz stated that
we support Israel because of

we must use our resources
"to proclaim the victory of
intelligence and justice."
"The lesson has been prov-
ed," he said, "that we must
have power disproportionate
to our numbers to use in the
interest of justice and
morality."
He urged those at the con-
ference to "go out and
educate. Use your influence.
All interests of world peace
mandate a strong Israel.
Urge your friends into
politics, and urge them to
visit Israel, to see Israel's
closeness to its enemies," he
said. "Keeping Israel strong
is our best assurance that
the flag of democracy will fly
in the Middle East."
Senator Richard Shelby
(D-Ala.), who delivered the
morning's keynote address,
said he sees no link between
the gulf crisis and Israel.
"We must not let Saddam
Hussein dictate the agenda
in the Middle East," he
declared, calling for
"insuring Israel's territorial
integrity" as vital for U.S.
safety and security.
