MANDELL L. BERMAN
has received the 1990 Endow-
ment Achievement Award of
the Council of Jewish Federa-
tions (CJF).
Mr. Berman, outgoing
president of the CJF, was
nominated by the Detroit
Jewish Welfare Federation to
receive the award, which is
given each year to the person
or persons most creatively
and productively aiding the
endowment program of the
Federation.
Mr. Berman was in-
strumental in the establish-
ment of the Federated Endow-
ment Fund of United Jewish
Charities. The fund's first
chairman, he provided leader-
ship and a vision of the poten-
tial of the endowment
program.
HAROLD FOLKOFF has
been named an "Awareness
Leader of the Year" by the
Awareness Communication
Team for the Developmental-
ly Disabled (ACT/DD) for his
contribution to increased
understanding and accep-
tance of people with
developmental disabilities
through volunteer speaking
engagements on behalf of
JARC, a Jewish association
for residential care. Mr.
Folkoff has helped audiences
understand the needs of
people with disabilities
by discussing his own ex-
perience growing up and lear-
ning to live independently as
a participant of the JARC
Maas Supported Indepen-
dence Program.
JUDITH JOSEPH of Grand
Rapids was elected a vice
president of the Women's
League for Conservative
Judaism at the biennial
convention.
DR. I. WALTER SILVER, a
graduate of Wayne Universi-
ty Medical School, was
honored by the American and
Michigan Academy of Family
Practice for 50 years of
outstanding contributions to
family practice. He is a
Diplomate of the American
Academy of Family
Physicians.
DR. IRVING SMOKLER, of
Ann Arbor, has been elected
to the national board of direc-
tors of the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Commit-
tee, Inc. Dr. Smokler, a past
president of the JCA/UJA of
Washtenaw County, is a prac-
ticing psychologist in Ann
Arbor.
JOEL D. TAUBER, past
president of the Detroit
Jewish Welfare Federation,
was elected treasurer of the
Council of Jewish Federations
at its General Assembly in
San Francisco, Calif.
CONRAD GILES was
elected chairman of the CJF
Governance Committee.
Elected to the board for a
two-year term were MARK
SCHLUSSEL, Federation
president, and JANE SHER-
MAN, former Allied Jewish
Campaign chairman.
Life members are outgoing
CJF President MANDELL
L. BERMAN, and MAX M.
FISHER, past CJF presi-
dent. Continuing their terms
until the 1991 General
Davis and Miller
SUSAN MILLER and ED-
WINA DAVIS were honored
by the Jewish Educational
Loan Service for their years of
service. Ms. Miller chaired
the JELS Loan Review Com-
mittee since 1985. Ms. Davis
coordinated the program as a
member of the JVS staff since
1984.
