Israel's Habimah
And Canada's Stratford

YOU SHOULDN'T EAT
EVERYTHING PUT IN
FRONT OF YOU.
You should avoid foods high in
cholesterol. It's a fact, a high
blood cholesterol level sub-
stantially increases your
chances of developing heart
disease. By cutting down on
fatty, rich foods, you can do
yourself a big favor. You could
lower your blood cholesterol
level and reduce your risk of
heart disease.

he connection between
Canada's Stratford
Festival and Israel's
national theater, Habimah,
goes back as far as 1948, the
year the Jewish state was
established. It was five years
before the Stratford Festival
became a reality.
Since the founding of the
Stratford Festival, several of
its leading figures, such as
Tyrone Guthrie, John Hirsch
and David William have had
occasion to work closely with
Israel's national theater.
David William, who was ap-
pointed artistic director of the
Stratford Festival in 1990,
had actually served as artistic
director at Habimah. It was
he who brought about other
contacts between Habimah
and the Stratford Festival,
while working in Israel.
Habimah, Israel's national
theater, was founded in 1917,
in Moscow. It was the first
professional Hebrew theater
in the world, and its aim was
to give artistic expression to
the experience of the Jewish
people and to the revival of
the Hebrew language.
The founders of the theater
turned to Russia's great direc-
tor, Konstantin Stanislaysky,
who headed the Moscow Art
Theater, for assistance.
Stanislaysky, a gentile, gave
the theater much support,
and in the following years
many of Habimah's directors
came from the Moscow Art
Theater.
Habimah encountered
many difficulties in the early
years. There was the food
shortage, after World War I,
and there was the political
pressure from the Jewish sec-
tion of the Communist party,

T

which was opposed to a
Hebrew theater. Ironically, it
was Joseph Stalin who ap-
proved the opening of the
theater. Russia's famous
writer, Maxim Gorky, also
gave Habimah his en-
thusiastic support.
The greatest triumph for
this theater came with the
staging, in 1922, of S. Anski's

The Dybbuk. The play

established Habimah's repu-
tation, and that of the direc-
tor, Yevgeny Vakhtangov, who
was a pupil of Stanislaysky,
and his associate at the
Moscow Art Theater.

In 1931 the Habimah com-
pany, after having toured
Europe and the U.S., settled
in Palestine. There the
theater was directed by its
own members, and its reper-
toire, derived from Jewish
and world literature, con-
tinued to grow over the years.
Habimah developed its own
following, a youth studio, and
its own periodical.
However, the company's ad-
justment to the cultural and
social changes in the land
was too slow, and in 1948,
with the establishment of the
state, a new era began for
Habimah, as foreign directors
were invited to work with the
theater.

The directors came from
England, Sweden, France, the
U.S. and other countries.
Among them was Tyrone
Guthrie, soon to be the
founder of the Stratford
Festival. In 1948 at Habimah
he directed Oedipus Rex, and
in the 1950s he returned to
direct The Merchant Of

Venice.

In 1958, on the 40th an-
niversary of its first perfor-
mance in Moscow, Habimah
was officially designated the
national theater of Israel. But
