RATED 3 STARS
BY MOLLY ABRAHAM — Detroit Free Press

has kept the focus clear from
moment to moment, although
the pace drags a bit in the se-
cond act. The performances
are generally good, but Ms.
Rosenstock should have rein-
ed in some of the eye-rolling
and puppy-dog swooning over
Bob from Judith Granite's
Miriam. Otherwise, Ms.
Granite is a classic nudging
Jewish mom, sometimes
literally pushy — but never
unloving.
Bruce Katzman is just right
as the long-suffering Joel,
who's always assigned the
Passover passage about bitter
herbs. And as Chris, Michael
Cooke, with his slouching,
hangdog face, conveys respec-
table second-rateness.
Mr. Sherman occasionally
relies on old gags, but his
dialogue is clever and he has
a knack for snappy curtain
lines. He also has a good eye
for visual jokes. At one point,
David S. Howard's crusty Abe
has grown tired of waiting
outside for Miriam. He's
angry with Sara, so he refuses
to enter her apartment, but
stands in the doorway and
bellows, "Miriam, I'm in the
car!"
Beau Jest sails along on
such moments of well-
observed truth. ❑
