E
llyce Field has been
exploring Detroit's
best kid stuff with her
husband Steve and sons,
Jordan, Garrett and An-
drew since she began
writing the Detroit
News weekly column Kid
Stuff' in 1987. Mrs. Field is
the quintessential
hometown tourist, taking
her family to local
museums, concerts, nature
trails and camping sites.
Her latest adventure has
been compiling an annotated
guide of where to go, what to
do and what to see for the
Detroit Kids Catalog: The
Hometown Tourist (Wayne
State University Press,
$9.95). This 450-page paper-
back book, with over 800
listed activities in the
metropolitan area, is
available at local bookstores.
The illustrations are by local
school children, including
one by Lori Kauffman of
Hillel Day School.
Detroit Kids Catalog is the
first book in a series of
guides for parents. The next
two books will be the
hometown consumer and
hometown parent guide,
both featuring a comprehen-
sive listing. Mrs. Field is
also the co-author of Kids &
Cars: A Parent's Survival
Guide for Family
Travel with Susan Shlom.
The Field family is busy
planning several working
and pleasure vacations in
Atlanta, Milwaukee and
Lakeland, Fla., to visit the
Tiger training camp. "Every
