About 20 years later, said
Mr. Schembechler, Jeff
Cohen played strong safety
for him at Michigan (1980-
82-83). "We had a game corn-
ing up down in South Bend
— Notre Dame, with that
Touchdown Jesus they got
down there —and here
comes Yom Kippur," recall-
ed the ex-coach. " 'Coach, I
can't play, my folks wouldn't
approve."Aw, I need ya,
Jeff. Ask them, see what
they say,' I tell him. He
comes back, says he can
play.
"Well, we get down to
Notre Dame and the guys
are suited up and I give
them one of my special pre-
game speeches, I get 'em all
fired up and I send them
down the steps from the
dressing room and out to the
field. As we're walking out
behind them, I notice one of
the last players is Cohen. I
come up behind him, grab
him by the shoulder pads
and I tell him, 'C'mon, Jeff,
let's go and win one for the
Kippur.'
Mr. Schembechler, who
also coached Jewish
linebacker Mike Boren at
Michigan (1980-83), said the
anti-physical rap against
Jewish men was wrong:
"The Jewish guys I had were
very tough, physical
players."
The Tiger executive,
noting that U-M's Don
Canham, Tiger broadcaster
Ernie Harwell and Red
Wings and Little Caesars
owner Mike hitch had won
the Foon Award before him,
said he was "very humbled"
to be in their company.
"I grevi up loving sports.
I got to work with people
like Woody Hayes, Ara
Parseghian," Mr. Schem-
bechler said. "But it's like
what President Kennedy
said: it's not what I have
done for Michigan but
what Michigan has done for
me. Even if I win the World
Series, my experiences there
will never be matched."
The silent auction, which
featured such sports items as
an All-Star autographed
basketball, raised a record
$12,000 for Hall of Fame
projects such as its annual
Hall of Fame Games for the
developmentally disabled.
The celebrity-packed
crowd at the annual dinner
included a surprise guest
appearance by Michigan
Gov. Jim Blanchard, who
was accompanied by his wife
Janet. He spoke to the crowd
about how sports enrich the
lives of Michigan's citizenry.
Also present were State
Sen. Jack Faxon and U.S.
Rep. Sander Levin, as well

and Jim Berk; ex-Lions

Dave Levy; Eastern Mich-
igan basketball coach Ben
Braun; Dr. Stuart Kirschen-
baum, state boxing commis-
sioner; and ex-Red Wings
