play out this scenario
without finding out what is
really on a woman's mind.
"They are not very good at
asking a woman what she
really wants."
How a woman can help the
situation is to be clear about
her expectations, short term
and long term. "Often she
isn't looking at the moment
to marry and have kids.
What she might want is a
slowly evolving relationship
and to establish herself pro-
fessionally."
Women also must be will-
ing to get to know a man as
opposed to seeing if he meets
her checklist of needs, Dr.
Levin says.
"When you ask women
what they want, I often hear
them say they want mar-
riage and family. What's
missing is the type of person
they'd like to marry; the
qualities of this person."
Men who reluctantly
marry tell Dr. Levin they
feel invisible, like com-
modities. "They feel like a
husband, provider and
father. They don't feel they
are really known in the rela-
tionship.
"People want to feel they
can bring all of who they are
into a relationship," he says.
"They want to feel they can
talk openly, not be judged or
criticized for holding diff-
erent beliefs. They want to
feel safe about who they are
in relationships." El
