aster Prints of Five
Centuries: The Alan
and Marianne
Schwartz Collection" will be
shown exclusively through
Jan. 6 at the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts. Nearly 200
master prints by 121 artists
from the 15th century to
1950 will be featured.
Alan Schwartz, a senior
partner in the law firm
Honigman Miller Schwartz
and Cohn, and his
wife Marianne, who has an
art history background and
is a trustee of the museum's
Founders Society, have been
acquiring art since their
marriage in 1950. The
Schwartz Collection is a col-
laborative effort where Mrs.
Schwartz is responsible for
the research on potential ac-
quisitions, while Mr.
Schwartz establishes
priorities and sets criteria.
The Schwartzes made
their first print purchase in
1963 (John Sloan's Night
Windows) but decided to
concentrate on this medium
in 1976. Their collection
focuses on important Euro-
pean and American prints
created before 1950 and con-
tains all styles of major
printmaking techniques:
woodcut, engraving, etching
and lithography. Some of the
master printmakers includ-
ed are: Durer, Picasso,
Munch, Rembrandt,
Degas and Whistler.
The 224-page catalog of
the exhibit is published by
the Founders Society and
contains entries for each
print with a detailed in-
troduction by Ellen Sharp,
curator of graphic arts. The
catalog is available in the
museum shop for $24.95.
The cover features the wood-
cut Franzi Reclining(1910)

Catalog cover

Art collectors Alan and Marianne Schwartz.

Heckel and is a favorite of
Mrs. Schwartz. "The catalog
is a labor of love and I have a
healthy respect for people
who do good catalogs. The
curator has done a
thoughtful juxtaposition
which brings new perspec-
tive to the profession," said
Mrs. Schwartz. The exhibi-
tion celebrates the 10th an-
niversary of the opening of
the Schwartz Graphic Arts
Galleries. Samuel Sachs,
director of the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts, provides
background information on
the gallery in the exhibition
catalog. He adds that the
generous contribution from
the Schwartz family provid-
ed for galleries, offices and
storage area for the Depart-
ment of Graphic Arts. "In
recognition of this support,
the galleries were named in
honor of both Alan and
Marianne Schwartz as
well as their children, Marc,
Kurt and Ruthanne.
In the catalog, Alan and
Marianne Schwartz write a
sketch on collecting prints.
"We will probably always be
collectors. There are so

makers and prints from
which to choose that our
`wish list' seems to grow
rather than diminish with
