from the same melody on
which Smetana based "The
Moldau."
Cantor Hirschenfang,
wearing a white gown with a
flowing skirt and sequined
top, performed Samuel
Barber's "Knoxville:
Summer of 1915." She
received a standing ovation
for her rendition of
"Knoxville," which Barber
set to the prologue of James
Agee's A Death in The Fami-
ly. As an encore, Cantor
Hirschenfang, a soprano,
sang "Summertime" from
Gershwin's classic Porgy
and Bess.

STUDENT PROJECTS
The children attending
Temple Israel's religious
school wrote letters to ser-
vicemen in Saudi Arabia.
Cortney Wolfe hopes her
letter will brighten some-
one's day. Libby Levin
wrote, " I wish you a lot of
luck, and I think what you
are doing is great."
Justin Freedland wrote
that he hopes no one
has to fight. In Ruth
Gilan's class at Hillel Day
School, many students wrote
poems about the Jewish
holidays. Michelle Sushin
wrote a Hebrew poem for the
New Year. ❑
