series of courses on Tuesdays,
Oct. 23 through Nov. 13.
"How to r iell Jewish Stories
to Your Children and Grand-
children" will be taught by
Ms. Corinne Stavish, instruc-
tor of speech communication
at Wayne State University
and Lawrence Technological
University. Ms. Stavish will
focus on why, what, when and
how to use stories in family si-
tuations, looking at tradition-
al tales and creating new
ones. The course will meet at
7:30 p.m.
"Spiritual Aerobics: A Look
at the Siddur" will be taught
by Rabbi Martin Berman and
Cantor Shimansky of Congre-
gation Beth Achim, Cantor
Gail Hirschenfang of Temple
Beth El, and Rabbi Bruce Aft,
Midrasha director and princi-
pal of the Community Jewish
High School. This course will
deal with the meaning of
prayer. Students will learn
basic prayers and the role of
the sacred. The course will
meet at 7:30 p.m.
"Challenge and Response:
Varieties of Jewish Belief in
America" will be moderated
by Rabbi Berman. This course
will feature a Reform, Conser-
vative, Reconstructionist and
Orthodox rabbi and will help
students understand similari-
ties and differences in the
various movements in Ameri-
can Jewish life. The course
will meet at 8:30 p.m.

at what prayers mean, will be
taught by Cantor Rose of
Temple Emanu-El at 7 p.m.
"The Jewish Heritage as
Expressed in Jewish Art,"
will be taught by Esther Tar-
noff Cooper of the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts. Topics to be
discussed include Jewish ritu-
al art, Marc Chagall and the
Jewish School of Paris and
Jewish art in America. It will
meet at 8 p.m.
"A Time to be Born and a
Time to Die," an introduction
to Jewish customs and beliefs
concerning deaths and burial
as well as Jewish views on
what happens after death,
will be taught by Rabbi David
Feder of Temple Emanu-El at
8 p.m.
"The Book of Psalms" will
be taught by Rabbi Eliezer
Finkelman, director of B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundations of
Greater Detroit, at 8 p.m.

Fund Established
The Agency for Jewish
Education announces the
establishment of the Esther
LaMed Scholarship for Israel.
Mrs. LaMed and her late
husband, Louis, have been
associated with the AJE since
1921, when he became a
teacher, then principal and

Temple Emanu-El and the
Midrasha, College of Jewish
Studies, will begin a series of
co-sponsored courses on Mon-
days begining Oct. 29.
"Aspects of the Holocaust:
Business of Annihilation"
will be taught by Prof. Sidney
Bolkosky of the University of
Michigan — Dearborn and co-
author of "A Holocaust Cur-
riculum — Life Unworthy of
Life." Dr. Bolkosky will focus
on the citizens of who went
about their business as usual
while participating in the
murder of the Jews. The
course will meet at 7 p.m.
"Open to Change: Recent
Developments in Reform Ju-
daism," a survey of some of
the trends and transitions of
the Reform Movement will be
taught by Rabbi Lane Stein-
Esther LaMed
was a board member. Her
daughter and son-in-law,
Renah and Max Bardenstein,
have also been board
members, and her grand-
children attended United
Hebrew Schools elementary
and high school.
The scholarship will be
awarded to qualified students
participating in an Israel
study program such as Project
Discovery and March of the
Living. Project Discovery
allows 10th and 11th grade
students to study for a
semester in an Israeli high
