yet modernized, office in
Detroit, the company no
longer concentrates on small
business people buying safes
to lock up cash.
The safes are bigger, the
variety is greater and the
customers are all over the
country.
Although the business was
good for Julius, his son,
Joseph Bing, really hadn't
planned on selling safes for a
living. After a year of col-
lege, Joseph started nudging
his father to relax and take a
vacation.
Julius accepted the oppor-
tunity, telling him to come
help with the shop so he
could take some time off.
Joseph never left.
Times got tough, though.
The Depression struck, ge-
nerating very little new
business.
Joseph wanted to get mar-
ried. And he couldn't afford
a ring. If he could sell just
one safe, Joseph said, he
could buy a ring for his
future wife, Margold.
He made the sale.
Martin Kohlenberg's entry
into the business was just as
unplanned. A lawyer, Mr.
Kohlenberg intended to
practice law. It was 1959 and
he had just married Sally
Bing.
Mr. Kohlenberg started
talking shop with his new
father-in-law, who immedi-
ately offered him a job. "If
you come work for me,"
Joseph said, "I'll take your
suggestions."
He never left.
So how did Julie Tache get
hooked? -
A recent college graduate
who was planning a wed-
ding, Ms. Tache in 1985 had
just sent out a swarm of
resumes. Her degree was in
sports management.
Her dad needed some help
and suggested she work part-
time during her job search.
She never left.
"I have a greater pride and
interest in seeing that the
business does well since the
company name reflects my
name and 80 years of hard
work," Ms. Tache says.
