f there's anything WJR
Radio's top dog, J.P.
McCarthy, likes better
than so many other things,
it's seeing folks enjoy
themselves.
The Detroit Metropolitan
Council and Greater Detroit
Chapter, City of Hope, made
certain this would hold true
on his night of nights, with
Joe the recent recipient of
their Spirit of Life Award at
Hyatt Regency.
But this wasn't all . . .
Every one of the large throng
that crowded the very festive-
looking Hubbard Ballroom
enjoyed another wonderful
feeling . . . knowing that the
dollars they spent to see J.P.
honored went to a great cause
. . . the research and hopeful-
ly eventual cure or control of
cancer.
"It's fun to cheat," said Her-
man Canner as he munched
on the hors d'oeuvres before
going out to dance up a storm
with rhythms by Mel Ball &
Colours; Leo Weingarden
didn't think it would be so
warm and wore his winter tux
with velvet cuffs and velvet
collar . . . Fred and Kathy Yaf-
fee, Nat and Helen Rechter,
Marge and Herb Rechter,
John Bloom (of course),
bowties in every color, pink,
black, blue, gold, silver, even
checkered; nice guy Jimmy
Jonna, Ron Licht, Sarah Lee,
Norman Allan.
No escaping the magic lens
of photog Gary Miller; Ruth
and Bob Berman a handsome
couple; Fritzi Goldberg and
Pearl Brodsky looking good;
fashions galore by the gal at-
tendees . . . sequins, pant
suits, everything . . . Linda
Shiffman, Midwest director,
City of Hope; Irwin and Don-
na Goren, Marvin and Shel-
ly Freedman . . . Nice touch
by one of the waitresses, put-
ting a napkin over her tray of
table refuse . . . JP. must have
loved those clever center-
pieces . . . chocolate-covered
styrofoam shaped like old-
time radios . . . Dr. Mark Saf-
fer, Detroit Metropolitan
Council president; Jerry
Greenbaum, Greater Detroit
Chapter president; Herb
Sandler; flourescent tubing
on all tables, baked apple
(hadn't had that in a long
time) for dessert, and the nice
touch of sorbet in ice cream
cones to complement an ex-
cellent dinner; 10 p.m. and
many tables still filled even

though a Thursday night .. .
Not much disappointment
with the musical comedy of
Gaylord & Holiday.
It was a fine affair . . .
everyone had fun . . . J.P. lik-
ed that.
SUZIE FAYNE isn't a
women's libber, but Matt
Brady's partner at the tavern
bearing his name on
Southfield north of 13 Mile
has those automatic seats
that change plastic with the
press of a button . . . but only
the gal's rest room . . . Marty
Wilk at Excalibur shows no
partiality . . . But have no
fear, fellows, Suzie hasn't
forgotten you . . . She and
Matt are looking into
something even more novel
for the gent's restroom.
Beverly Hills is notably
rough on bars . . . just don't
like them . . . Matt Brady's,
with its six-foot TV screen
and other sets for all sports,
also has one of the largest
bars around . . . Wider for
sure so that singles can eat
there from the 35-year-old
grill that Matt's dad used to
use at Diamond Jim Brady's
on Seven Mile Rd. . . . Plaque
on wall while walking in or
walking out reads: "Owned
but not operated by Fidelity
Bank."
THE FAN CLUB of
Metropolotin Detroit is a
very unique group . . . It has
no favorites but is a fan of
every organization that needs
fund-raising . . . More and
more people who realize its
purpose are getting on the
membership bandwagon.

Unlike other organizations,
the Fan Club doesn't support
any one charity . . . Each year,
John Bloom, Mira Linder and
their cohorts_put on affairs to
raise money for a select cause
. . . First one was Detroit Ar-
tists Market, then Music
Hall, WTVS/Channel 56,
Michigan Opera Theatre, and
this year the Attic Theatre
. . . Number six in February
will again be for Music Hall.
"A Night In The Attic" is
Oct. 26 at the New Center
Atrium One, corner West
Grand Blvd. and Second, with
20 restaurants putting out
food to go with the haunted
house theme . . . Tickets will
be $45 . . . Call Carol Pastor
at Attic Theatre, 875-8285.
Recent press/trustee
cocktail party was at Too
Chez in Novi . . . This is a
group that just doesn't dream
about doing things . . . it
makes things happen . . . and
always for the fund-raising

.

betterment of worthy groups
. . . Give John Bloom a call at
559-1645 and have fun
volunteering your services.
LAST YEAR, 500 women
raised $5,000 as City of Hope
Helen Rosenberg Cancer
fighters held their annual
Glamorama Luncheon and
Fashion Show . . . This year,
hopes are for more in the
Duarte, Calif. medical and
research center coffers . . .
It'll be held Nov. 1 at Adat
Shalom Synagogue on
Middlebelt.
Fashion show will again be
produced and directed by
Leah Marks featuring
Renaissance Couture,
Cocktails, Valentina, Mat-
thew Hoffman Jewelry,
Malter Furs, Baby & Mee,
Pollak's Bridal, Bellissima
Too and Malibu Makeup.
For the fifth consecutive
year, Andi Wayburn will be
chairperson . . . Sylvia Eps-
tein, ticket chairgal, has her

Hundreds enjoyed

themselves and
helped fight
cancer.

beat by a lot of years . . . she's
been at it over 25! . . . Ida
Markle heads the over 20
boutiques that this year will
include hand-painted
children's furniture; and
Michele Kaplan is raffle and
door prize chairlassie . . .
Reservations are a must .. .
Call Sylvia at 557-3519 .. .
donation is $25 . . . babysit-
ting also by reservation only.
RUBENSTEIN KOSHER
salmon and albacore tuna
are being brought into the
Detroit market by broker bor-
thers Jamie and Larry Snider
. . . Parent company for
Rubenstein, Farwe st
Fisheries, is based in Seattle,
Wash.
IT'LL BE CALLED
Maariv Mystery Theater
because event will happen
after sundown . . . by Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses, Nov.
18, featuring local profes-
sional actors and actresses.
Every year, dinner dance
was held . . . this will be first
mystery theater with a lot of
fun in store, plus open bar, an
all-out Sperber's dinner and
cash prizes . . . Tickets are
$75 . . . For info call the syn-
agogue, 851-6880, or Elaine
and Seymour Cohen,
968-4529 . . . Mark Segal is
chairman.
