it

Concept East in 1963, runn-
ing for 15 performances.
Detroit Free Press writer
Harvey Taylor reviewed the
show, calling it "a tightly
written, honest short play in
which (Steinhardt) studies
the havoc wreaked on a young
wife's marriage and by the
hatred and contempt she bore
for her father .. .
"Steinhardt's writing is
honest, unaffected and discer-
ning as to characterization."
Despite his age, Mr.
Steinhardt retains confidence
in his writing ability. "I feel
I'm more active mentally,
creatively, than ever before.
As a matter of fact, I looked
at a play I wrote 10 years ago
and I tore it up."
He is bitterly disappointed
that the year-old Jewish
Ensemble Theatre has not
been receptive to the three
Jewish-oriented plays he has
sent them. But he does have
a potential new outlet for his
work.
Mr. Steinhardt sent his first
play, Before the Morning, to a
Louisville, Ky., publisher,
Aran Press. Not only did they
agree to publish the play, but
they asked him to send more.
A total of 11 of Mr. Stein-
hardt's plays have been
published by Aran, with one
more on its way. The plays are
included in Aran's catalogue
of plays which goes to 500
theaters nationwide.
Despite his bitterness over
his lack of success, Mr.
Steinhardt says it is futile to
ask, "What if I had to do it
over again?"
"I've already done it. It's
just like swimming. It's just
like going in the river. 'Oh,
it's beautiful across, on the
other side of the river, I'll
make it.' But I'm already in
the water. I can't go back.
What am I do to, throw this in
the garbage?
"If I had to live my life
over again it (playwriting)
wouldn't be worth it. Because
you come up against egos of
people who are not compe-
tent. People who have money.
People who don't like your
face or don't like where you
live or don't like the way you
talk.
"Remember, in all these
smaller theaters, there are
people who don't know the
difference between creativity
and trivia. Why do you think
so many plays open up on
Broadway and close?"
But Mr. Steinhardt is happy
with the work he has done.
"My work will live long after
I'm gone. A play has to have
a sense of humanity, it has to
have universal appeal. That's
why the play I wrote in 1935
(Before the Morning) is still
good today." 111
