The Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies, a division of
the Agency for Jewish Educa-
tion, is now taking registra-
tion for fall courses beginning
in October.
Rabbi Joseph Gutmann,
professor of art history at
Wayne State University and
adjunct curator of the Detroit
Institute of Arts, will teach
a course called "In the Begin-
ning." This four-week course,
which meets at 9:30 a.m.
beginning Oct. 7, will study
the Book of Genesis.
Susie Russek-Osherov,
Israeli historian, poet and ar-
tist will teach a course called
"Between Jews and Chris-
tians: The Encounter of Jews
and Christians During the
Medieval Period." Ms.
Russek-Osherov will discuss
the conflict, religious tension
and differences between
Christians and Jews and the
development of negative
Jewish stereotypes during the
medieval period. The four-
week course will meet at 7:30
p.m. beginning Oct. 8.
Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg
of Bais Chabad Torah Center
will teach a course called
"Primer on Jewish
Mysticism." Rabbi Silberberg
will cover the nature of souls,
worlds, reincarnation, Torah
and mitzvot as elucidated in
works of kabbalah. The text
Tanya, by Rabbi Shneur
Zalman of Laidi will be used.
This eight-week course
will meet 7:30 p.m. beginning
Oct. 23.
Rabbi Silberberg will also
teach a course called "Talmud
— Tractate Baba Metzia."
This tractate contains laws of
business transactions, fraud,
contractual disputes and laws
of acquisition. The text to be
used will be the Steinhaltz
Talmud which is the newest
English translation and com-
mentary on the Talmud.
Knowledge of Hebrew is not
required. This eight-week
course meets 8:30 p.m. begin-
ning Oct. 23.
Dr. David Schoem, assistant
dean of freshman and
sophomore years and
sociology department pro-
fessor at the University of
Michigan, will teach a course
called "The Contemporary
American Jewish Experience:
Community and Identity." Dr.
Schoem will explore issues
and ongoing controversies
within the American Jewish
community focusing on
Jewish identity, Jewish
education, intermarriage and
intergroup relations. The
four-week course will meet at
7:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 18.

Renee Wohl, instructor and
director of the Resource
Center for the Agency for
Jewish Education, will teach
a course for teachers called
"Israel — Translating Dif-
ficult Issues into the
Classrooms' This course is
designed for educators who
wish to develop a model for
teaching contemporary
Israel. Topics to be discussed
include Zionism, the
diaspora, and Arab-Jewish
relations. Students com-
pleting this course may
receive 3/4 credit hours
towards a Hebrew teacher
certificate through the
Midrasha. The four-week
course will meet at 7:30 p.m.
beginning Oct. 16. A dinner
will be served at 6:30 p.m.
All the courses meet at the
United Hebrew Schools
building. There is a fee. For

Temple To Offer
Holiday Workshop

Temple Emanu-El plans a
holiday workshop series.
This adult education class,
which begins/ Oct. 18, will
teach participants how to
celebrate the major and some
minor Jewish holidays. Par-
ticipants will learn the songs,
blessings, recipes and crafts
that accompany Shabbat,
Chanukah, Passover, Rosh
Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Yom
HaShoah, and others.
There is a fee. For informa-
