far better to say, 'I'm

to say 'I'm a fat slob who
likes to eat pizza.' "
- A personal is a place to put
your best foot forward, she
says. "Talk about what's
Igreat about you, but put in a
redeeming vice or two so you
sound human."
The best ads are funny in
some way "because it's a
funny process meeting
someone through a maga-
zine," she says. Start on a
light note, but if you can't be
funny, she advises, list a
comedian or two that you
like.
People Connector per-
inals must be 30 words or
less, and most people have
ao trouble filling the space,
says Shirley Berman, who
handles the personals at The
Jewish News.
A personal "doesn't have

to be the perfect, all-
encompassing picture of
you," she says. "It's a snap-
shot, capturing a mood or a
moment — a part of you, or a
few parts."
Ms. Block advises women
that men tend to like a
woman who describes what
she looks like, and who con-
veys a sense of fun. She ad-
vises men that women want
to know that a man is stable
and secure, that he is ready
to settle down. They appre-
ciate a man who "gives some
sense of material and emo-
tional stability," she says.
Most importantly, "be
yourself," Ms. Block advises.
"You're going to have to be
yourself sooner or later; you
might as well start now." ❑

Rabbi Lewis Prefers
The Positive

Rabbi Shnayer Lewis, a
singles activities adviser
in Baltimore, prefers a
positive and very general
approach to writing per-
sonal ads.
Here are some of his
pointers for writing the
best ad:
• Don't be too
specific in describing
who or what you're look-
ing for. The object is to get
as many responses as you
can, he says. "You can
always winnow them
down later."
• Always write that
you will answer every
reply. "Put this line in if
you put nothing else," he
stresses. Remember that
"99 percent of the people
out there" are just as
afraid to answer your ad
— for fear of being re-
jected — as you might

minutes from your front door."

• Talk to someone
you trust as you write
your ad, and read it to
them, he said. "You want

others see you." I=1
