Pinchas Zukerman
Has Varied Career

Pinchas Zukerman has
become known as a violinist,
violist, conductor, teacher,
chamber musician and cham-
pion of young artists.
Born in Tel Aviv in 1948,
Mr. Zukerman began his
musical training with his
father, first on recorder, then
clarinet, and finally violin. At
age 8, he began studying with
Ilona Feher at the Israel Con-
servatory annd the Academy
of Music inlbl Aviv. With the
guidance of Isaac Stern and
Pablo Casals, the support of
the American Israel Cultural
Foundation and scholarships
from Juilliard and the Helena
Rubinstein Foundation, he
came to America in 1962 to
study with Ivan Galamian at
the Juilliard School.
In 1967, Mr. Zukerman won
First Prize in the 25th Leven-
tritt International Competi-
tion , setting the stage for his
solo career.
Among his numerous
achievements, Mr. Zuker-
man's prolific recordings in-
clude 75 releases widely
representative of the violin
and viola repertoire. Interna-
tionally acclaimed, his
catalogue of recordings for
Angel, CBS Masterworks,
Deutsche Grammophon, Lon-
don Records, Philips Classics,
and RCA contains 19 Gram-
my nominations and two
awards.
As a chamber musician,
Pinchas Zukerman has col-
laborated with prominent ar-
tists and young colleagues
around the world for over 20
years. Included among these
musicians are Daniel Baren-
boim, Jacqueline Du Pre,
Isaac Stern, Jean-Pierre
Rampel, the Guarneri
Quartet, and Midori.
Mr. Zukerman's conducting
career began in 1970 with the
English Chamber Orchestra.
He has since conducted many
of the world's leading or-
chestras including the New
York Philharmonic, Boston
Symphony, the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, the National
Symphony, the orchestras of
San Francisco, Montreal,
Toronto, and Ottawa, as well
as the Berlin Philharmonic,
the London Symphony Or-
chestra, and the Israel
Philharmonic.
He served as music director
of the South Bank Festival for
three years and the St. Paul
Chamber Orchestra for seven
years. Beginning in 1990, Mr.
Zukerman will begin a three-
year appointment as prin-
cipal guest conductor of the

Dallas Symphony Orchestra's
new International Music
Festival.
While continuing to build
his catalogue of 20th century
masterpieces with recordings
and film of Bartok, Berg,
Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and
Prokofiev, Pinchas Zukerman
has expanded his perfor-
mance of living composers to
works by Boulez, Knussen,
Kraft, Lutoslawski, Neikrug,
Norgaard, Picker, Schwant-
ner, Takemitsu, and others.
He also conducted the
American staged premiere of

the opera Where the Wild _
Things Are by Oliver
Knussen.
Next season he will perform
the Neikrug Violin Concerto
throughout the United States
and will premiere the Ibbias`
Picker Viola Concerto with
the Houston Symphony and
Christoph Eschenbach the
following year.
His extensive 1989-90—
season began with a tour of
recitals and concerts in
Australia with the Israel
Philharmonic. In the United
States he was heard in
recitals with pianist Marc
Neikrug, with the Vermeer
Quartet in Chicago, and his
orchestral solo appearances -
included the New York
Philharmonic, the Los
Angeles Philharmonic, and
the symphonies of Pitts-
burgh, St. Louis, Minnesota, L '
and Indianapolis.
He conducted the Montreal
Symphony, the Dallas Sym-
phony, Cincinnati Symphony,
and the orchestras of
Rochester and Ottawa as
well.
In Europe, Mr. Zukerman
performed as soloist with the
BBC Symphony and toured in'
recital.

Perlman Has Risen
To Highest Ranking

Itzhak Perlman was born in
Israel in 1945. He completed
his initial training at the
Academy of Music in Tel Aviv.
He came to New York and
soon was propelled into the
international arena with an
appearance on the "Ed
Sullivan Show" in 1958.
Following his studies at the
Juilliard School with Ivan
Galamian and Dorothy Delay,
Mr. Perlman won the
prestigious Leventritt Com-
petition in 1964, which led to
a burgeoning world-wide
career. Mr. Perlman has ap-
peared with every major or-
chestra and in recitals and
festivals throughout the
world.
In November of 1987, he
joined the Israel Philhar-
monic for history-making con-
certs in Warsaw and
Budapest, representing the
first performances by this or-
chestra and soloist in Eastern
bloc countries.
He also joined the Israel
Philharmonic for its first visit
to the Soviet Union, in April
and May of 1990, and was

cheered by audiences in
Moscow and Leningrad who
thronged to his recital and or-
chestral appearances.

Izhak Perlman lives in New
York with his wife Toby and
their five children.
He will be performing in ;
Ann Arbor later this season
for the University Musical
Society.
