IDF Soldier
Killed In Golan

Tel Aviv (JTA) — An Israel
Defense Force soldier was
killed and an officer was
slightly wounded last week
when their jeep struck a
mine in the Golan Heights
as they were rushing to the
aid of a severely injured
Druse shepherd.
The dead soldier, First Sgt.
Avshalom Mahfud of Petach
Tikva, was buried in his
hometown. The 38-year-old
reservist was the father of
four children.
The shepherd, Salah
Tabarieh, 54, of Buk'ata
village, died of wounds he
sustained from a mine ex-
plosion after he reportedly
pulled down about 20 feet of
wire fence surrounding the
minefield to open a grazing
area for his flock of goats. He
was the father of eight.
The IDF soldiers had been
driving nearby and re-
sponded to the noise of the
blast. Their jeep, speeding
through the gap in the fence,
set off another mine.
The officer, identified only
as a reserve lieutenant
colonel in the Engineers
Corps, was reprimanded and
suspended by Gen. Yossi
Peled, commander of the
northern sector, for failing to
observe standing orders on
the identification and mark-
ing of minefields.
He was also cited for enter-
ing a minefield without
taking proper precautions.
IDF sources said the offi-
cer, who had just returned to
duty after an extended
leave, failed to request maps
of the mined area before
entering it.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The first
public admission that Israeli
forces have been on a higher-
than-usual state of alert be-
cause of the Persian Gulf
crisis was made Tuesday by
Defense Minister Moshe
Arens.
Mr. Arens told some 50
leaders of the State of Israel
Bonds Organization, here to
celebrate the group's 40th
anniversary, that the United
States should compensate
Israel for the high cost of the
military alert.
Mr. Arens said President
Bush's proposal to forgive
Egypt's $7 billion debt was
"understandable under the
circumstances." But he add-
ed that when the United
States talks of "burden-
sharing" in the crisis, it
