issue of the hater and hatred
in the proper context can be
found in an extraordinary
Talmudic passage told in
Berachot. In the neighbor-
hood of Rabbi Joshua, son of
Levi, there lived a sectarian.
The sectarian used to trou-
ble Rabbi Joshua greatly in
his interpretations of the Bi-
ble.
One day the rabbi thought,
"I shall curse him." When
the propitious moment for
cursing arrived, Rabbi
Joshua was dozing. On
awakening, he said, "I see
from this that my intention
was improper. For it is
written: 'And God's mercies
are over all of God's works';
and it is further written,
`Neither is it good for the
righteous to punish.' "
We are human in our feel-
ings. The enemy is human
also. Somewhere in between
there is a need to strike a
balance. Would that it were
so simple. That is why it is
written in Orchot Tzaddikim
(15c): "Pray for your enemy
that he serves God."
This very thought is
reflected in a prayer we say
on Rosh Hashanah, one that
is 1,200 years old and whose
author is unknown. It is
uyehataynu kil l'avidicha:
May all the world come to
worship you and unite in
seeking that which is good
for all. ❑

An Overview
Of Hebrew U.

Opened in 1925, with a
nucleus of three research in-

microbiology and Jewish
studies — the Hebrew Uni-

grown into a multidiscipline
institution comprising seven
faculties and 14 schools,

Spread over four campuses
at Mount Scopus, Givat
Ram, Ein Kerem and
Rehovot, the university's
enrollment of over 19,000

It has attracted
distinguished scholars, as
well as outstanding young
men and women to its stu-
dent body from all over the
world, and countries
worldwide turn to the uni-
