America's oldest balalaika
orchestra, founded in Detroit
by Russian immigrants, is at-
tracting new immigrants
nearly 70 years later. Zhanna
Ivanovskaya Ketslakh, a re-
cent arrival from Minsk, will
sing with the Balalaika Or-
chestra of Detroit in concert
8 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Oakland
Community College in Royal
Oak. Former soloist with the
Red Army Ensemble of
Minsk, Ms. Ivanovskaya will
present Russian folk songs in
the traditional style of her
homeland.
The Balalaika Orchestra
will play Russian, gypsy and
Eastern European folk music
under the direction of
William Goldes, a second-
generation orchestra member,
its arranger and balalaika
soloist.
