Quilts Redefined
At Sybaris Gallery
orels
/feelei'are-..3esitt-
merican quilts are
undergoing a
redefinition. Just ask
Linda Ross and Arlene
Selik, owners of Sybaris
Gallery in Royal Oak, where
14 quilts by six artists are
featured through Oct. 27.
"There is a strong area of
interest in the quilt as an art
form," said Ms. Ross.
New York quilt artist
Robin Schwalb incor-
porates historical and lang-
uage references, including
Hebrew, in her work. One
quilt is entitled Babel, refer-
ring to the Tower of
Babylon.
All the quilts are diverse
in materials, techniques and
subject matter. They are no
longer bound to the tradition
of hand stitching. Some of
the works resemble pain-
tings.
"These pieces are not for
the bed, but for the wall,"
added Ms. Ross.
Father And Son
The father and son team of
Steven and David Victor
are the new co-chairmen of
the Michigan chapter of the
American Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee (AIPAC).
Not only do the Victors col-
laborate in their volunteer
work, but they work
together professionally.
The elder Mr. Victor
(Steven) is founder of the
American Educational In-
stitute, Inc., a national spon-
sor of continuing education
for physicians, attorneys and
dentists, while the younger
Mr. Victor (David) is presi-
dent of the company. Both
father and son are attorneys.
Upcoming AIPAC events
include a fund-raising
dinner on Nov. 8 and a fund-
raising breakfast on Nov. 9.
School Bells
The first day of school is
always eventful, especially
for the youngsters at Adat
Shalom Nursery School.
Dottie Levitsky, school di-
rector at the nursery, reports
that the children are ad-
justing quite well. Teachers
Carol Fridson and Joanne
Rosenberg had an inter-
esting first day with
students Zachary Stern

and Rikki Aston. Zachary
Stern said: "Last year I was
a baby, and now I grew into
a big boy." Rikki Aston add-
ed: " This room is good look-
ing. What's cooking, good
looking?"
New Branch
Cong. Shaarey Zedek held
an ice cream social on Sept. 5
to introduce the new branch
facility, Hillel Day School,
where some classes will be
offered. Over 300 people at-
tended the event to meet the
teachers and see the
