Registration Starts
For Avery School

Avery Hebrew School for
Russian children, a project of
F.R.E.E. — Friends of
Refugees of Eastern Europe —
under the auspices of Chabad-
Lubavitch, is entering its se-
cond year.
Free of charge, classes are
held on Tuesdays 3:30-4:45
p.m. for boys and girls ages
6-13. High school students,
ages 14-16, can attend a
Judaism class at Berkley
High School on Wednesdays
at 3:30 p.m. Instruction is in
English.
'leachers, Rochel Zaklos and
Rochel Wineberg, combine
their lessons with arts and
crafts projects depicting
Jewish objects. In addition,
the curriculum includes
Shabbatons and field trips.
One of the students had a bar
mitzvah, assisted by the
school. Several boys have
formed a "Tefillin Club" and
put on tefillin before class.
Anchor families are asked
to stress the importance of
providing children with a
Jewish education. For

Welcomes Speaker

Temple Emanu-El will
welcome Sara Lee, director of
the Rhea Hirsch School of
Education, Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion in Los Angeles on
Sept. 8.
Sara Lee will speak on "Im-
ages of the Future: Jewish
Education Faces the 21st
Century." She will also speak
to the temple's Education
Committee and board of
trustees at a luncheon
meeting following Shabbat
services.
Sabbath service will begin
at 10:30 a.m. and will be
followed by a kiddush.

Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg
of Bais Chabad Torah Center
will talk on "The Month of
Elul — Exoteric and Esoteric
Implications" at 8:15 p.m.
Sept. 10 at the Torah Center.
The lecture is part of the
series on basic Judaism.
Two new courses on the
Steinsaltz Talmud will be
given by Rabbi Silberberg on
Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m.
and Thursday nights at 8 p.m.
