One of Metropolitan Detroit's Most Beautiful
and Exciting Restaurant-Lounges

Presents

Marriage is one of those
strange things, the comedian
says. "I like to talk about all
the stereotypical things you
run into when you get mar-
ried, things like decorating a
house together or registering
for wedding gifts. Things from
a man's versus a woman's
perspective hoping to hit that
universal button all people
can identify with."
He also likes to discuss
topical issues, pointing to
Joseph Hazelwood, the cap-
tain of the Exxon tanker that
caused the greatest oil spill in
history.
"After just nine months, he
gets his license back. If you or
I get a DUI (driving under the
influence) rap we'd be sharing
a bunk with a serial killer.
Now, that doesn't make a
whole lot of sense, does it?"
More and more geared
toward taking on issues of the
day, Manton recently joined
forces with writer Bill Gorgo
to create a comedy bit called
the "News Revue," seen Mon-
day nights at "Catch a Rising
Star" in Chicago.
"Bill and I have created a
totally new topical, im-
provisational show," Mr. Man-
ton says. "It's turning out to
be extremely funny and we've
got aspriations that it could
become a TV or radio show as
well."
Mr. Manton is passionate
about one issue of the day:
child abuse. To help raise
money to fight child abuse, he
is organizing Chicago Funny
Bones with fellow comic
Harry Ibinowitz. The benefit,
scheduled for Nov. 5, was
started in San Diego. This is
the first time it will be held
in Chicago.
In addition, Mr. Manton
performs corporate stints and
has done shows for Jewish
fund-raising organizations,
among them Hillel College
Age Youth Services and
United Jewish Appeal.
He admires comedians such
as Jay Leno and Jerry
Seinfeld, who are more
writers than performers.
"I'm a writer-oriented com-
ic more than a performance-
oriented comic," he says. "So
all of this is hopefully being
focused towards me writing a
lot more comedy one day. The
life of a performer is not the
stable kind of life that a
writer might enjoy, so that's
really my goal. I'm looking
forward to putting shows
together rather than being
out there performing.
"I don't care if I'm ever the
world's funniest standup or
the most popular. But I do
want to make comedy, in one
form or another, my life's
work. And I'm getting
there." ❑
