QUALITY AND CONSISTENCY IS OUR PRIORITY!

0

or years it's been a
classic joke among
comedians and laymen
alike. It's the one about the
young boy who arrives in New
York and asks a native how to
get to Carnegie Hall.
"Practice," says the astute
resident. "Practice!"
Budding young comedian
Spike Manton must have
heard that joke and taken it
to heart. For after quitting
his job as a sales manager for
Proctor and Gamble, Manton
now is making the rounds of
comedy clubs everywhere,
practicing and honing his
craft.
After fewer than two years
as a professional standup, Mr.
Manton was one of 10 semi-
finalists in the recent Jimmy
Walker Comedy Contest, held
in Detroit and Chicago. As
such, Mr. Manton went to Los
Angeles and was seen by Bud
Freeman, founder/owner of
that city's famed Improv. Mr.
Manton had the opportunity
to tape a show for "Evening
at the Improv," which, he
says, will hopefully be seen
this coming winter on cable's
Arts and Entertainment
network.
Born Kevin Manton in
Pulaski, N.Y., Spike started
out with varying ambitions,
none of which included
becoming a comedian.
Although never a shy person,
he admits, "I was never the
class clown. I was always a

big fan of comedy, but I went
to Bradley University in
Peoria, Ill., to major in
economics and ultimately
became an entrepeneur."
But a spot on the universi-
ty's speech team led to an in-
terest in comedy writing, and
soon Mr. Manton decided he
wanted to try his hand at it
fulltime. He figured the best
way to do that was to become
a standup and try out his own
material.
So he moved to Chicago,
where he met his wife, Tami
Lifton, a former Detroiter,
and began doing standup
around town. As things got
better professionally for him,
he eventually quit his sales
job to devote all his time to
comedy.
Mr. Manton appears in
venues all over the country.
He recently completed an
engagement at the Claridge
Hotel and Casino in Atlantic
City, and will be appearing
locally at Chaplin's East Sept.
5-8 and headlining at the
Comedy Castle Nov. 20-24.
His particular brand of com-
edy, he says, centers on rela-
tionships and a dizzying look
at the headline news.

"I don't do impressions per
se, except a little George
Bush," Mr. Manton explains.
"And I don't have any music
so I'm pretty much of a one-
dimensional act. But, hope-
fully, I'm able to put into
words things other people are
thinking about that strikes
them as a bit strange."
