ROMAN
TERRACE

of the best roles ever written
for a male actor-singer."
Part of the reason for the
freshness is the fact that
Topol has not had a con-
tinuous involvement in the
show, so he's not burned out
on the part. Another reason is
that the show is a little dif-
ferent with each new cast,
and Topol adjusts his inter-
pretations accordingly.
It's also an actor's
challenge, whether he's doing
a part for the first time or for
the 1,000th time, to make the
performance a fresh and new
experience for the audience.
"Otherwise," Topol says, "we
are bad actors."
In addition to his role as
"Tevye," Topol has appeared
in numerous film and theater
roles. He has no preference for
one over the other, except that
he feels the stage is a more in-
timate setting for, and re-
quires more concentration
from, an audience.
"I believe that when you see
the show live, you get a much
more intimate feeling with
the characters. You can iden-
tify with them," he says.
"The difference between a
movie and seeing a live show
is that in the movie, the direc-
tor and editor decide for you
what you see and when.
When you're in the theater,
you focus on whomever you
want. You do the editing
yourself."
As for the musical's endur-
ing appeal, 'Ibpol says it's sim-
ple: Fiddler is good entertain-
ment. "It's a beautiful story
with beautiful staging, perfor-
mances and music."
But it's a source of pride for
'Ibpol that a story based on
Jewish customs, folklore,
humor and philosophy can
have such worldwide appeal.
In fact, Topol speaks in his
autobiography of an incident
where actress Shirley
MacLaine saw a performancd
Fiddler by a local theater
company in Tokyo, Japan. She
was so moved that she hur-
ried backstage to con-
gratulate the local `Tevye:
She told him she had seen
Fiddler in New York and Lon-
don and had thought it was
great then. But his perfor-
mance, she said, surpassed
them all.
The actor was shocked and
wanted to know if the show
was doing well in England
and America. "Very well,"
MacLaine replied.
He then asked if audiences
were truly interested in the
story. When Maclain said
very much so, again the actor
was stunned.
"I'm surprised," he said,
because the story "is so
Japanese." ❑
