With A Touch Of Romance,
Historic Dearborn Inn Re-Opens

ow that the Dearborn
Inn is a Marriott Ho-
tel, romance seems to
be the keyword for this
historical Georgian architec-
tural edifice that opened back
in 1931.
After being closed for 18
months, the Dearborn Inn re-
opened in April 1989, show-
ing off a $28 million renova-
tion and restoration.
Added was the 7,560 square
foot Dearborn Ballroom (500
people) plus the Fairlane,
Grosse Pointe, River Rouge
rooms (3,000 square feet corn-
bined to accommodate
another 150) . . . The Alexan-
dria Ballroom (3,444 square
feet for 225 guests) opened in
1932.
Imagine a reception in one
of the ballrooms after being
wed in the outside Village
Green gazebo used extensive-
ly for ceremonies? . . . Then
spending the honeymoon
night in one of the five col-
onial homes which have been
totally restored . . . All except
the Edgar Allen Poe house
have at least four suites (Bar-
bara Fritchie, Patrick Henry,
Walt Whitman, Gov. Oliver
Wolcott) . . . In Poe's replica,
guests get the entire house
. . . All fabrics and wall-
coverings in the five houses
and hotel are documented .. .
(registered copies of the
originals.)
Former Ritz Carlton-ites
Cheryl Pasluzny and Paul
Jalenik are now catering
heads at Marriott's Dearborn
Inn, along with Liam
O'Brien.
A big Party Planning Show
is set for Sept. 16, 1 p.m. to
4 p.m., with 25 to 30 vendors,
bridal fashion show, mock
ceremony on the outside
Village Green, strolling musi-
cians among samples of
varied music for weddings.
CONGRATS . . . to Jack
Pearlman . . . on his 90th bir-
thday . . . A party in honor of
the Hannah Schloss Old-
Timers life member is being
held this week in Chicago by
his daughters, Adele Robins
and Lori Friend.
AFTER FOUR months at
the Novi Hilton Hotel as
catering sales manager, Cyn-
thia Weber is putting on her
first fashion show, "Lunch 'n
Style" with Saks Fifth
Avenue, Fairlane Town
Center, Aug. 23 . . . Will be in
the Swan at Novi Hilton,
1-275 and Eight Mile . . . For

more info, call Cynthia,
349-4000, Ext. 1035 . . . She
was formerly catering direc-
tor at Book Cadillac, Westin
and Sheraton Oaks.
WITH SO MUCH em-
phasis being placed on
healthful eating these days
that certainly includes
minimal salt intake, a
Michigan Department of
Agriculture. Food and Dairy
Division rule seems very
strange, if not antiquated .. .
I hope a federal government
ruling will take precedence.
According to Regulation No.
541 — Handling of Smoked
Fish, "All smoked fish shall
be processed so that the
finished product shall have a
salt (sodium chloride) content
of not less than 5 percent."
Acme Smoked Fish, enter-
ing the local market on a loud
• bang note from New York
with its products (lox, sable,
chubs, etc.), has a salt content
of less than 2 percent, which
sounds much more reason-
able when speaking about
health consciousness.
BIRTHDAY CONGRATS
. . . to Betsy Leemon . . . to
Dee Shapiro . . . to Mary
"Mickey" Stanek.
CELEBRATING three
birthdays together for the
past 40 years, Judy (Utley)
Saywitz, Fern (Stone) Adels-
tein and Amy (Fleischer)
Cutler, made this one a pa-
jama party at Fern's home .. .
Judy was 46 on Aug. 1, Fern
46 on Aug. 8 and Amy 46 on
Aug. 9.
The three gals met at the
James Vernor School in
Detroit . . . Judy, presently
living in La Jolla, Calif., flew
in for the birthday reunion.
They were joined in the p.j.
festivities by Norrine (Koven)
Freeman and Shelly (Land-
garten) Kohl, also from Ver-
nor Elementary, who brought
their sleeping bags to Fern's
home.
Three more gals who team-
ed up with the Vernor lassies
in the ninth grade at Mum-
ford High rounded the party
. . . Sharon (Gould) Eaton,
Sharlene (Averbuch) Beck
and Susan (Glickstein)
Shubiner.
Yes, they were allowed to
stay up past 2 a.m., playing
board games, watching 8 mm
movies of Sharon's Sweet 16
and pre-prom parties, etc. . . .
Pizza and salad came at
midnight.
CONGRATS . . . to Sadie
Waldman Honsberger . . . on
her 75th birthday.
HERE'S THE KIND of

guy Mike Ilitch is . . . Varie-
ty Club of Detroit, the
Children's Charity, wanted to
honor him this year and Mike
not only didn't turn this fine
organization down but said it
would have to be the entire Il-
itch family . . . Isn't that
great? . . . And so, Mike,
Marion, their five sons and
two daughters, will all be
honored in what is a rarity
. . . an entire family being
feted by a charitable
endeavor.
Date and place haven't been
set yet, but wherever it'll be
held, the sellout sign will
come out . . . that's how very
popular the wonderful Ilitch

An 18-month
renovation cost
$28 million.

family is . . . so closely knit
and a distinct credit to our
community.
FUNDRAISING DIN-
NER for Detroit Maccabi
Club, co-hosts with the
Jewish Community Center of
next week's Youth Games, is
this Tuesday at Holiday Inn
of Southfield on Telegraph .. .
It's being headed by Max
Sheldon, Billy Jacobs and
Seymour Brode.
Tomorrow night, Billy will
play host to 24 U.S. officers of
U.S. Committee Sports For
Israel with a party at his Bud-
dy's Pizza on Northwestern.
"I DO", DEPT. . . . Ann
Case, regional marketing
director of Little Caesars
Enterprises, and Mark
Soberger, are now wife and
hubby.
TOMORROW IS when
bamboo-headed mallets held
by guys on horseback hit the
little white English willow
ball between two goalposts
. . . It's the second annual
Southfield Gold Cup Polo
Competition at Duns Scotus,
Nine Mile and Evergreen, 2
p.m. . . . Tickets are $5 at the
gate or $4 if picked up today
at Southfield City Hall recep-
tion desk until 5 p.m. or Parks
and Recreation reception
desk today or tomorrow .. .
Both buildings are at South-
field Civic Center, Evergreen
at 10 1/2 Mile.
CONGRATS to Sophie
Sulkes . . . on her 80th birth-
day . . . Recent party for her
at Mountain Jack's of Bloom-
field Hills given by son San-
ford and wife Shari was like
a reunion with friends who
Sophie hadn't seen in more
than 50 years.
