around (13-14 age group), se-
cond in uneven bars and
balance beam and third in
the vault.
Leah Angell,
Baltimore
Leah is a veteran of the
JCC Maccabi Games in
Chicago in 1988, having won
three medals in swimming.
She won gold medals in 100
meter backstroke (1:14.75)
and 200 back (2:39.80) and a
bronze with Baltimore's 400
meter freestyle relay team.
She swam a meet record
26.37 in the 50 yard
freestyle in February at the
Association of Independent
Schools Swimming and Div-
ing Championships.
Caryn Sanders,
Baltimore
Caryn, age 16, will repre-
sent the Jewish Community
Center of Greater Baltimore
in gymnastics. She was a re-
gional and national qualifier
in the USAIGC meets this
year and was on the Region
7 team competing in the
Eastern Nationals in Macon,
Ga. In the Maryland state
meet she placed first in
M-10 FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 1990
David Bernhardt,
Wayne, N.J.
A 6'5" 215-pound basket-
ball center, Bernhardt led
Wayne to a gold medal in the
regional JCC Maccabi
Games in Pittsburgh in
1989. He also played on the
Wayne team in Chicago in
1988.
Bernhardt is a junior at
Wayne Hills High School
and was an all-league
honorable mention in
baseball.
Steve Warner,
Los Angeles
Steve, now 16, has been a
nationally ranked age group
swimmer since age 10 and
won five 12-year-old age
group events at the 1986
JCC Maccabi Games in
Toronto.
This year, he participated
in the 1990 Junior National
Short Course Champion-
ships in Iowa City. He fin-
ished sixth in the 1650
(15:55.85) and eighth in the
500 (4:38.02).
He was named a high
school All-American as a
freshman last year at Santa
Monica High School. His
best times include 4:32.70
for the 500 yard freestyle,
1:57.16 for the 200 yard in-
dividual medley and 4:09.65
for the 400 yard individual
medley.
Perry Urken,
Wayne, N.J.
Perry Urken is the lone
holdover on the Wayne, N.J.,
Maccabi soccer team which
finished third in Chicago
two years ago. The same
team defeated Detroit last
year for the gold medal in
the regional JCC Maccabi
games in Pittsburgh.
Urken is captain of the
team, as well as captain of
his high school team in
Millburn. He was a New
Jersey group 2 all-state
honorable mention selection
this year, as well as Essex
County second team and all-
conference first team.
Evonne Allerkamp,
San Antonio
Evonne was ranked 120th
nationally in 1986 in the 12
and under age group. The
following year she was
ranked 54th in 14 and under
and sixth in doubles.
She played in the Maccabi
Games in Israel last year,
losing to the eventual cham-
pion in the quarterfinals.
She is now ranked first in
San Antonio in 18 and under
and in the top eight in Super
Championship Girls 18 Sin-
gles.
Barbara Berend,
Holland
Barbara Berend will rep-
resent the Netherlands in
tennis in Detroit, although
she is also a soccer player. At
age 16, she is tennis cham-
pion of Maccabi Amsterdam
and ranked 15th for girls
under 16 in Holland.
She participated in the
Maccabi Games in Israel in
1989.
This June, Barbara par-
ticipated on the under-17
Dutch national soccer team
in the Nordic tournament.
She played against teams
from Sweden, Norway,
Finland, Denmark, Iceland
and Germany.
