Students Intern
In Project JOIN
Fourteen college students
and one rabbinical student
are completing summer in-
ternships serving and learn-
ing about the Jewish com-
munity of Detroit. They have
been working at area Jewish
communal agencies through
Project JOIN (Jewish Occupa-
tional Intern Program).
Supervised by Jewish Voca-
tional Service, JOIN en-
courages students to become
involved in Jewish communal
service as either professional
staff or lay people. The pro-
ject, which helps students
focus on their educational
and professional goals, places
interns in agencies for eight
weeks according to their
interests.
Interns spend four days
each week at their
assignments and attend day-
long seminars on Fridays.
Organized by the JVS staff,
the seminars include over-
views of area agencies, tours
of local facilities and discus-
sion of current issues. They
include discussions of the
history, as well as current and
future problems of the Jewish
community.
Project JOIN is funded by
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion allocation to Jewish
Vocational Service.
The 1990 interns are Lisa

IDF Decides Against
Distributing Gas Masks
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israel Defense Force has
decided not to begin the gen-
eral distribution of gas
masks to civilians at this
time in order to avoid pro-
voking hostile action by the
unpredictable Iraqi Presi-
dent Saddam Hussein, ac-
cording to Gen. Dan
Shomron, IDF chief of staff.
He spoke after near panic
gripped some parts of the
country, following threats by
Hussein to use chemical
warheads against Israel if
Iraq were attacked by Israeli
warplanes masquerading as
American.
Gen. Shomron explained
on Israel Television that the
decision to defer the general
distribution of gas masks
and anti-chemical warfare
kits was made because if
they were distributed to
Israeli civilians now,
Saddam Hussein might
assume an attack by Israel
was imminent, Gen.
Shomron observed.
Gen. Shomron said the
Iraqi charge of Israeli collu-
sion with the United States
seems to have two objectives.
One is to convince the
Arab states that Israel is
their common enemy, and
that they should therefore
join Iraq in confronting
Israel and its American sup-
porters.
The second objective is to
warn Israel to take no action.
