West Germany Eases
Draft Rule For Jews
Bonn (JTA) — The end of
the Cold War has made it
easier for Jewish youths to
avoid compulsory service in
the Bundeswehr, the West
German army.
While Jews had been
routinely exempted from the
draft if they could prove
family suffering under the
Nazis, the authorities in-
sisted on detailed explana-
tions, which often put them
through emotional ordeals.
Now the authorities have
become less demanding, ac-
cording to recruits called to
service this week.
Certificates of exemption
are more easily obtained.
Former Defense Minister
Rupert Scholtz extended el-
igibility to "third genera-
tion" Jewish survivors.
