FRIDAY, JULY 20, 1990

own at the Old Port
in Marseille, the
morning fish market
draws a large crowd. Fisher-
men weigh, slice and wrap
the fresh-caught fish for their
customers, while tourists
watch the activity, their
cameras clicking.
Others wander over to the
massive vessel Neptune, built
as the stage set for the film
Pirates and now docked at the
colorful Old Port. And still
others simply enjoy the sight
of the water and the hills in
the distance.
It's not surprising that most
tourists to Marseille are
drawn immediately and often
to the colorful Old Port. Of
special interest to the Jewish
traveler is the way this port
city has served as an impor-
tant gateway for Jews. Since
1962, when Algeria, Tunisia
and Morocco gained in :
dependence from France,
thousands of French-speaking
Jews from North Africa head-
ed for the great port of
Marseille.
They came in such numbers
that Marseille is now the se-
cond largest Jewish com-
munity in France and the
third largest in all of Western
Europe, after London and
Paris.
For the Jewish traveler, the
city provides the chance to
visit a city that has a distinc-
tive Jewish flavor. A sister ci-
ty to Haifa, Marseille has 23
synagogues, a Jewish day
school, and five kosher
restaurants. There's a Jewish
radio station, Jewish
newspaper published six
times a year, a full-facility
Jewish community center —
and a genuine enthusiasm of

North African Jews for their
adopted city.
"We don't just like
Marseille. We love Marseille.
It's a very special city," says
Marcel Drei, sitting in his of-
fice at the Jewish Communi-
ty Center not far from the
center of town.
"I'm a Mediterranean,"
says Algerian-born Drei, who
serves as cultural director of
the Jewish Community
Center, "and when I go to
Jerusalem, I feel the same
mood there as here because
Marseille has the soul of a
Mediterranean city!'
As he talks, he leads the
way out of his office and
across the outdoor patio to the
synagogue. Built in 1864, this
is the largest and grandest of
the city's synagogues. Its in-
terior is beautiful, with
graceful arches, vividly
painted ceiling, glass
chandeliers and ornate
Byzantine style design.
"More and more Jewish
visitors are coming to
Marseille!' Drei says, "and
they're often surprised to see
such a beautiful synagogue
here!'
Quite often, he adds, they're
fortunate enough to visit
when a festive Sephardic wed-
ding is taking place; wed-
dings are frequent in this
Jewish community of the
young. Over 50 percent of the
Jews in Marseille, Drei says,
are under 30 years old.
The community directs
itself to the needs of its youth.
Some 2,000 youngsters at-
tend Talmud Torah school,
and 400 are enrolled in Ecole
Yavne, the Jewish day school.
"It's very important to us to
build schools and educational
centers!" Drei says. "This is
the future for our communi-
ty."
