tive in many groups.
He served as vice president
and president of the Interna-
tional Federation of Actors,
and as senior vice president of
the American Jewish Con-
gress. He has been on the
board of Amnesty Interna-
tional, and was appointed by
President Jimmy Carter in
1977 to serve a five-year term
on the National Council for
the Arts. He recently assum-
ed presidency of the
Associated Actors and Ar-
tistes of America.
Looking back on his 43
years in show business, Bikel
admits there have been low
points to counterbalance the
high times.
"But the low points are
few," he says. "Sometimes
roles you think you should
have had a crack at, but didn't
get for one reason or another,
can get you down.
"I was disappointed that I
didn't get a chance to do the
movie of Fiddler on the Roof
a role I've played on stage
some 988 times to date. I
would have liked to have done
that.
"But I don't keep score. If
you dwell on the low points in
your life you become morose,
and then you don't do what
needs to be done. I prefer to
look ahead and not
behind." ❑

Reform Offers
Certification

New York (JTA) — Many
religious-school teachers in
remote areas have been
teaching for years without
having ever received cer-
tification.
To remedy the situation,
the Reform movement's
Commission on Jewish Edu-
cation is now offering a na-
tional program to certify
those teachers who live in
areas where a recognized
supervised certification pro-
gram is not available locally.
Requirements for certifica-
tion include a bachelor's
degree, verification of two
years' satisfactory teaching
experience in a Reform
movement school or its
equivalent in a Union of
American Hebrew Con-
gregations camp institute,
and completion of a series of
required and elective
courses in such areas as Jew-
ish religious thought, the
Bible, Jewish history and
techniques or religious
teaching. ,
It is open to individuals 18
years of age or older.
