I BEST OF EVERYTHING I
Aficionados And Celebrities
Honor Rebuilt 'Haunt'
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
ort of a come-back-to-
life celebration was
the recent fifth an-
niversary of Ristorante di
Modesta on Northwestern
Highway.
When it opened back in
June 1984, the popular din-
ing spot soon became a
favored haunt of culinary afi-
cionados, the media and local
celebrities.
Then came February 1988
. . . and a devastating fire
than all but demolished the
cozy Italian restaurant .. .
Almost two years later, on
Dec. 24, 1989, it finally re-
opened again with a new in-
terior facelift.
The large crowd of at-
tendees at the recent anniver-
sary bash jammed both out-
side under a striped tent over
the patio with its strolling
musicians . . . and inside
where air-conditioning felt so
good in the high-80s weather.
It sounded like a big band,
but you knew this couldn't
possibly be so . . . Going to the
lounge area for further
scrutiny revealed something
far from it . . . just a young
man at an electric keyboard
and a gal songstress . . . Mak-
ing all the big band rhythms
was an electric synthesizer
that not only gave out a lot of
solid beats, but also sounds of
clarinets, trombones, etc. . . .
as people danced on the
Italian pink marble floor in
much merriment.
astrologer
Celebrity
Madam Cleo not telling for-
tunes, "I'm a guest tonight"
. . . Dick and Karen Lutz such
a fine couple . . . Art Bricker,
Shirley and Ray Abrams,
Mitch and Jean Newman,
George Zeff wearing his
French straw hat, Ken and
Sharon Singer, optometrist
Morrie Firestone passing out
forks, John Bloom.
You name the hairdo, some
gal was wearing it . . . So
many guys 'n gals
fashionable and not so
fashionable, dressed and
casual . . . Stan and Carole
Zerman, Bob Levinson, Irv-
ing Nusbaum, Arsen and
Sandy Sohegian, Art Klein
passing out napkins, owner
Manuel Chavez looking
younger in a white tuxedo
and no mustache, Max Green,
Kathy Katkin, Opus One
Chef Peter Loren telling
about his new "Kitchen
Sage," a sort of 911 for home
cookers, Herman Shugal,
whose father was a first
cousin to artist Marc Chagall,
Rosalie Fox.
Weightlifter Sherri Aaron
and "just one teensy weensy
bit of the chocolate cake,"
Richard Warshaw eating the
chocolate goodie with eyes
closed in ecstasy, fashion coor-
dinator Pat Sands and hubby
of a year-and-a-half Larry
Brady, Leah Baum, Phyllis
and David Barr, whose ban-

daid on his face was "from
shaving," fashion producer
Leah Marks, Tony "The
Barber" Cipponeri, Ernesto's
chef Ernie DeMichele, Jacob-
son's Lillian Greenwald who
dressed so many of the gals,
Andy Anderson in his plaid
jacket a standout, Yiannis
Karemalis, hairdresser to the
stars.
Don't know how the valet
parkers found enough spaces
for cars . . . Joan Eisenshtadt
from Scottsdale, Ariz.,
visiting mother, Florence
Eisenshtadt, and looking for
a place here to live, John
Cetrone and his laughing golf
ball (wonder if he takes it on
the course with him?).
Vinnie Johnson, Detroit
Pistons hero, signing
autographs, Eddie Murray,
Detroit Lions placekicker,
General Manager Jaye
Cooper, Mariette and Ernest
Drucker, Jose Reyes, Dick
Masuda, Roy Zurkowski.
And the people watching
fashion parade went on .. .
and on ... and on.
CONGRATS . . . to brother
Marvin and sister-in-law

38th anniversary . . . to

tha Cohen, Aviva Robinson,

Bernice Forrest, Susan Gold
and Adria Aronow.
CONGRATS . . . Golda
Hartz . . . on her 78th birth-
day . . . in town for the sum-
mer with hubby Murray .. .
from Palm Aire near Pom-
pano Beach, Fla.
AFTER ALL these years,
Mario's on Second Boulevard
now has a dance floor .. .

put it in his Crystal Room for
dancing to a live three-piece
band Thursdays through
Saturdays from 8 p.m.
CONGRATS ... to Seldon
and Birdie Barris . . . on their
57th anniversary . . . His up-
coming birthday this year
will be number 85.
THE WEATHER didn't
look good . . . Rain the day
before and still windy during
the next day . . . But that
evening, much better weather
could hardly be asked for .. .
82 degrees and a nice soft
breeze.
Tropical Connection, a
Caribbean reggae and calyp-
so band (bass, bass drums and
steel drums) played fine
music that allowed folks to
mingle and converse without
distraction at recent opening
of Novi Hilton Hotel's Swanee
Outdoor Cafe, Eight Mile and
Haggerty.

p.m. to 9 p.m., outside of the

on the floor three years ago
and just over a year later
became assistant manager

promotion . . . as Honda sales

having 1991 Park Avenues
and Regals in stock.
