Holocaust Book
To Be Completed
Editors working on a book
which chronicles world-wide
reactions to the Holocaust
expect to complete it in late
1992.
For the past two years,
David Wyman and Nan
Karwan-Cutting, the book's
editor and managing editor,
have worked with Detroit
Holocaust Memorial Center
Director Rabbi Charles
Rosenzveig to prepare The
World Reacts to the Holo-
caust 1945-1990.
When completed, Karwan-
Cutting expects the
1,000-page book will interest
high school and college
students as well as scholars
and the public who are in-
terested in the Holocaust.
Originally, Rabbi Rosenz-
veig intended to compose an
encyclopedia on the Holo-
caust. But when Israel's Yad
Vashem announced a simi-
lar project, Rabbi Rosenz-
veig decided to focus the
book on world-wide reaction
to the Holocaust. •
While other books about
the Holocaust deal mostly
with events leading to and
during the Holocaust,
Wyman said no one has
researched global reaction to
the event until now.
Wyman, a history and
Judaic studies professor at
the University of
Massachusetts, and Kar-
wan-Cutting, a history pro-
fessor at Cornell University,
asked 27 scholars from
around the world to research
their country's reactions to
the Holocaust.
Although each author will
include a brief discussion on
how Jews were treated
before and during the Holo-
caust, the article will focus
on the reaction to the Holo-
caust. That includes
geographic and demographic
shifts, governmental reac-
tions, treatment by the
media, legal and educational
systems, the role of Jewish
religious and social groups
and attempts to make the
Holocaust a universal
tragedy.
Among the countries in-
cluded in the book will be
Hungary, Poland, Ireland,
Czechoslovakia, both East
and West Germany, Italy,
Spain, the United Kingdom,
the United States, Israel,
and the Vatican.
Because Wyman and Kar-
wan-Cutting could not find
scholars available in every
country they wanted to ex-
amine, especially in Latin
America, they would like to
update the book five or 10
years after it is published.
