chief, "must you hasten to
Baghdad?"
"To take 5,000 lives,"
Pestilence replied.
Upon the way back from the
city of Caliphs, Pestilence and
the caravan met up again.
"You deceived me," the chief
charged angrily. "Instead of
5,000 lives you took 50,000
lives!"
"Nay," said Pestilence,
"5,000 and not one more. It
was fear that killed all the
rest."
People carry within them a
cargo of imaginary or real
fears. Afraid of the dark, of
open spaces, of heights, of
snakes, of black cats, of Fri-
day the 13th, of lightning, of
thunder, of germs, of AIDS.
Afraid of getting married, of
staying single, of getting old,
of getting fat, of loneliness, of
crowds, of war, afraid of in-
security. And having attain-
ed security, afraid of losing it.
But there is a wonderful
pattern for overcoming fear.
Wherever there is life, there
is pain. There could be no life
without pain. And those who
walk through the valley to
bring a life into the world
know its meaning. Wherever
there is pain, there is love.
Wherever there is love, there
is healing. Wherever there is
healing, there is hope.
Wherever there is hope, there
is life. That is the cycle of
overcoming fear. 111
