he Shavuot service at
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek had special
meaning for 15 women who
celebrated their b'not mitz-
vah before an overflow crowd.
Members of the class includ-
ed: Esther Applebaum,
Pamela David, Esther
Frank, Paula Glazier,
Marilynn Gordon, Roberta
Ingber, Karen Katz, Bever-
ly Laker, Gail Lutz, Lillian
Olender, Arline Rein, Bon-
nie Seligson, Marlene Toft
and Diane Wyner.
President Irving Laker
remarked that this was pro-
bably the first time in the
history of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek that a presi-
dent was on the bimah the
same day his wife (Beverly)
had a bat mitzvah.
Karen Katz was motivated
to have her bat mitzvah when
her good friend and Hebrew
study companion, Pamela
David, decided to study
Torah. David enlisted Katz in
her bat mitzvah class so they
could continue studying
together. On a personal level,
the bat mitzvah was the
Jewish education Katz never
received as a child. Katz grew
up in a Roman Catholic home
on the east side of Detroit.
Upon accomplishing this goal
after two years, Katz exclaim-
ed: "I'm exhilarated." Her en-
tire family attended the
service.
Paula Glazier had no trou-
ble learning her Torah por-
tion. If she needed any help,
she consulted her daughters,
Ilana and Mindy, Hillel Day
School students.
Temple Israel recently held
b'nai mitzvah for 14
members. (A total of 56 adults
celebrated their bar or bat
mitzvah this spring.) Proud
teacher, Barbara Gutman,
was on the bimah for moral
support. The recent class in-
cluded: Sara Brooks, Renee
Gerger, Gerald Gerger, Iris
Gilbert, Barbara Gold,
Rita Haddow, John Had-
dow, Jacqueline Layne,
Hannah Moss, Barbara
Gerstein, Barbara Spivack,
Janet Strote, Joyce Wolk
and Gloria Woolman.
MS BENEFIT
The Park West Gallery
recently held an exhibit of
paintings by Laszlo Dus to
benefit the WSU Multiple
Sclerosis Research and
Clinical Center. The center is
direced by Robert Lisak and-
Paula Dore-Duffy. Some of
the benefit sponsors included:
Provost and Mrs. Sanford
Cohen, Senator Jack Fax-
on, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar
Feldman, Mrs. Mildred
Simon, Dean and Roberta
Sokol and the Honorable
Hilda Gage. Painter Laszlo
Dus is a victim of MS. His
exhibit continues through
June.
FORGOTTEN
HARVEST
Forgotten Harvest, a non-
profit prepared food program
established to collect food
from restaurants and caterers
for soup kitchens and
shelters, was hardly forgotten
by the 200 patrons who at-
tended the first fund-raiser. It
was held at Bonnie's
Patisserie, which was
celebrating its 10th business
anniversary. Bonnie's sister,
Nancy Fishman, is presi-
dent of Forgotten Harvest.
Her other sister, Marcia
Fishman, executive director
at Hillel Day School, was also
on hand for the festivities.
Other members in the crowd
who helped raise $6,000 in-
cluded: Judge Brian Levy,
Joyce Keller, Rabbi and
Wendy Ye dwab, Ron
Wilner, Gary Dembs,
Laurie Pappas and Nancy
and David Gad-Hart ❑
