Monte Nagler's annual
photography exhibit at
Somerset continues through
May 20. The exhibit is entitl-
ed "The Face of China: the
People and the Land."
Nagler has just returned
from a trip to China where he
was invited to be tour
photographer by the Chinese
government in conjunction
with Travel Key/U.S. Ex-
changes Company of Grosse
Pointe.
In addition to the portraits,
he also captured the surroun-
ding landscapes with a
panorama camera.
The exhibit will also con-
tain new images from recent
trips to the American
southwest and Eastern
Europe as well as many of his
classic photographs.
There will be an opening re-
ception 7 p.m.-9 p.m. May 11.
Art Fair Set
In Birmingham
The Michigan Week Cele-
bration in Birmingham will
kick-off with its 12th Annual
Birmingham Art Fair in
Shain Park in the middle of
Birmingham, sponsored by
the Birmingham Bloomfield
Art Association, 10 a.m.-6
p.m. May 19 and 20.
The fair, which has grown
each year, will host 162 juried
artists, 81 of whom will be
new to the Art Fair this year.
There will be a variety of
media from painting and
photography, to sculpture,
jewelry, baskets, glass, fibers,
pottery and more.
There will also be a
children's art activity area, so
they can participate in pain-
ting, clay, collage or even have
their faces painted.
Twelve food concessionaires
offer a variety of ethnic and
gourmet selections.

Xochipilli Gallery of Birm-
ingham will exhibit recent
paintings and prints by John
Tormey from May 12-June 9.
The gallery will host a recep-
tion for the artist from 2 to
5 p.m. on May 12.
Tormey is a resident of Ann
Arbor who just returned from
a year in West Germany com-
pleting the paintings for this
exhibit. During his year as
recipient of the Slusser Award
from University of Michigan,
Tormey completed post-
graduate study in Karlsruhe,
West Germany, as well as
creating theater perfor-
mances in Czechoslovakia.
