THE SCHOOL FOR GIFTED STUDENTS
Call The Jewish News
Pat Roan Judd in costume for her role as Papa Bear.
Alex had trouble
distinguishing the real from
the fantasy world, Judd
says. But now when she
turns into a bear, she sees
Alex, 3, pretending with her
and enjoying it.
Molly Faultersack, 3, says
having Miss Pat is fun
"because I like her."
Nursery school director
Joy Kaplan says the
students aren't the only ones
who learn from Judd.
Kaplan videotapes Judd's
classes and shows the tapes
to her staff.
By watching Judd, her
staff has learned techniques
that help focus the children
on activities and how to be
more comfortable with
music in the classroom,
Kaplan said.
Klok has already put some
techniques to use. After
Judd left, the children have
trouble quieting down for
their next guest — a Bloom-
field Township police officer.
But when Klok suggests
they put on their magic
glasses and ears like they do
with Miss Pat, the children
pretend to do so and are
ready to listen.
Judd says her main
responsibility is teaching,
but she also learns from the
children. For example, while
discussing Papa Bear, one
child suggests a rooster
should interrupt his sleep.
Judd discovers a way to in-
corporate it into her story.
"I get plenty of ideas from
them. They are things I
might never have thought
about," Judd says. "If a kid
has an idea, I will go with
it. I get far more from them
than I give them."
