Canadian Court
Ends Jewish
Leader Probe

Toronto (JTA) . Canada's -
Supreme Court has ruled to
terminate a public inquiry
into the conduct of an official
of a Jewish women's organ-
ization accused of making il-
legal political contributions.
According to its 6-1 judg-
ment, the inquiry into the
so- called Patricia Starr af-
fair must be dropped because
it has in effect become a
criminal proceeding.
The Supreme Court ruling
ended many months of legal
wrangling over whether the
inquiry violated the rights of
Starr and others whose con-
duct was examined.
The issue was whether
Starr, who was president of
the charitable fund of the
National Council of Jewish
Women of Canada, Toronto
Section, made improper con-
tributions to the campaign
funds of several federal and
provincial politicians.
The contributions, which
amounted to $85,000, were
said to have come from tax
refunds received by the Na-
tional Council on a senior
citizens housing project.
Although the inquiry has
been quashed, police in-
vestigations are continuing.

For All Our
Summer Camp Needs

mitment to relocate the con-
vent away from the site of
the death camp.
According to Belgian Jew-
ish leaders, fund raising for
the project by the Catholic
Church in Paris and other
cities ensures that construc-
tion of the interfaith center
will continue to be financed
for at least another six mon-
ths.
The Belgians reported that
a placard in front of the con-
struction site indicates that
the funding for the building
is being provided by a foun-
dation created by the Polish
church. A sketch there also
presents the future con-
figuration of the inter-
religious center for edu-
cation, prayer and informa-
tion.
The center, located approx-
imately 600 yards from the
Auschwitz site, will house
an administrative building,
a hotel and youth hostel,
meeting halls, a kitchen and
a library. The convent that
will house the Carmelite
nuns is to be separated from
the interfaith center by a
wall.
