Aish HaTorah
Presents Classes

Aish HaTorah/Aleynu in
conjunction with the National
Jewish Outreach Program
will offer crash courses in
basic Jewish concepts.
Hebrew Crash Course Level
II and The Crash Course in
Basic Judaism will be held in
May.
The Level II Hebrew Crash
Course is for people with a
basic level of Hebrew reading
but wish to improve their
skills. There is a materials
fee.
The Crash Course in Basic
Judaism will consist of five
sessions dealing with belief in
God, prayer, the Sabbath,
Jewish observance, and sex-
uality. There is no charge.
The classes will be held in
the Southfield/West Bloom-
field areas sometime in
mid-May.
In a class hosted by Aish
HaTorah/Aleynu at 7:30 p.m.
May 6, Rabbi Alon Tolwin
will examine seven pro-
phecies made about the
Jewish people and how they
were actualized.
The class will be held in the
Aish Halbrah office. There is
no charge. For information,

JELS To Accept
Loan Applications

Jewish Educational Loan
Service (JELS) is now accep-
ting applications for the
academic year 1990-1991.
JELS is a community
endeavor by a group of service
organizations who pool their
funds to provide interest-free
educational loans to students
in the Jewish community.
JELS is coordinated by the
Jewish Welfare Federation of
Detroit and administered
through Jewish Vocational
Service (JVS) and Hebrew
Free Loan Association.
Finding the financial
resources necessary to pursue
higher education can be dif-
ficult. JVS, through its com-
prehensive resource network,
can provide assistance and
counseling to students and
their parents.
The educational loan coor-
dinator at JVS guides
students to sources of finan-
cial aid which may be
available to them from
schools, the government and
the community. The coor-
dinator works with the stu-
dent to develop a realistic
financial plan for the school
year.

Summer Institute
To Offer Classes

The Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies, a division of
the Agency for Jewish Educa-
tion, will offer three courses
in its "Summer Institute?'
Peter Machinist, associate
professor of biblical and an-
cient studies at the Universi-

ty of Michigan will teach a
course called "An Introduc-
tion to the Book of Ruth."
Machinist will focus on
biblical law and the history of
ancient Israel and will
discuss why this book has
become the source of inspira-
tion for those who choose
Judaism. This course will
meet at 7:30 p.m. on May 8
and 10.
Rabbi Rod Glogower, of the
Hillel Orthodox Union and
adjunct lecturer in Judaic
Studies at the University of

Michigan, will teach a course
called "The Sanctity of the
Land of Israel." Rabbi
Glogower will analyze the
concept of the sanctity of the
land by examining biblical,
talmudic and medieval
sources. This course will meet
at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays and
Wednesdays, June 13-27.
Todd Endelman, professor of
history at the University of
Michigan will teach a course
called "Judaism and Jewish
Identity in Twentieth Cen-
tury America?' Endelman
will trace the transformation
