FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 1990

Daughter Joanna has ap-
peared in the chorus and
danced. Sons Matthew and
Sam have stage managed.
Danny, 17, Gurwin's
youngest child, "is a kid who
came out singing." A profes-
sional actor, as well as a Merit
Scholar, he recently won the
Arts Recognition and Talent
Search full tuition scholar-
ship to the University of
Michigan School of Music.
One of Gurwin's produc-
tions involved her entire clan.
"When the audience looked
at the program," she says,
"they read: Gurwin, Gurwin,

Gurwin, Gurwin and Gurwin.
You know, it sounded like a
law firm. It was fun!"

And there's always another
opening, another show, just
around the next marquee. In
September of 1990, Gurwin
will start touring throughout
Canada in I Do! I Do! for
Janus Productions.

"I just enjoy entertaining
people, seeing them smile and
making them feel good," Gur-
win says. "The theater has
always made me happy. I en-
joy giving that to au-
diences." ❑

Hilberry-Bonstelle
Set New Season

A Shakespeare production
directed by the Stratford
Festival's Marti Maraden, a
return engagement by Brian
Bedford, and a play by Wayne
State University graduate
Elaine Jackson are among
the shows for the 1990-91
season at the Hilberry and
Bonstelle Theatres.
Maraden will direct Shake-
speare's Twelfth Night at the
Hilberry. She has acted for six
seasons at the Stratford
Festival and six seasons at
the Shaw Festival, both in
Canada.
Bedford's The Lunatic, The
Lover and The Poet, which
played three sold-out perfor-
mances in February at the
Hilberry, will return for three

more performances next
season. Tracing Shake-
speare's life through scenes
from his plays, this is the per-
formance which Bedford has
been touring since its debut
at the Canadian festival last
summer.
Highlighting the Bonstelle
Theatre's five-play season is
Paper Dolls, a play by WSU
graduate and former
Bonstelle actress Elaine
Jackson, who won the
1978-79 Rockefeller Award for
Playwriting, the 1979
Langston Hughes Play-
writing Award and a national
Endowment for the Arts
Award for playwriting in
1983. Paper Dolls uses a
minstrel-show format to mock
