Rosen. resides in Birmingham. His
mother. Marjorie Cahn, lives in
Northville. Two brothers: Mitchell Rosen
is president of Liberty Heating Co.;
James Rosen is the deputy bureau chief
of Moscow for United Press
International. His grandmother, Winnie
Borne Sherman, is an artist, who
resides in New Jersey. Another
grandparent, Nathan Rosen, resides in
Southfield.
EDUCATION: He was graduated from
Kalamazoo College with a bachelor's
degree. majoring in political science. He
has a juris doctor from George
Washington University.

BACKGROUND: Gerald Rosen was raised
in Oak Park, attending the public
schools and Congregation Beth Shalom.
"Oak Park was a great place to live. -
Rosen says.
Rosen's father, Stan, was in the
heating and air conditioning business
and played professional baseball for the
Chicago farm system. Rosen also
excelled in sports. He was an all-state
high school tennis champion, winning
several Northwest- Suburban League
titles.
After he was graduated from Oak
Park High School in 1969, he attended
Kalamazoo College. He participated in
the foreign study program, spending his
junior year at the University of
Stockholm. During his senior year he
received a research grant to study the
Swedish media's handling of American
news during the Vietnam War and
Watergate. His paper was written and
published in Swedish and English.
During this time he also completed a
student teaching assignment in
Philadelphia and was an intern for
Governor Milliken.
After receiving a bachelor of art's
degree, he went to Washington, D.C.
From 1974 to 1978 he worked on
Senator Robert P. Griffin's staff and
went to law school in the evenings. "It
was a very exciting time, during
Watergate:' Rosen says.
In 1979, he returned to Michigan
with his law degree and began working
at the firm of Miller Canfield Paddock
and Stone as a litigator. In addition to
his law career, he pursued his interests
in politics. He helped run Senator
Howard Baker's 1980 presidential
campaign and Senator Robert Dole's
presidential campaign in Michigan in
1988. In 1982, Rosen ran for Congress
against Sander Levin and lost. "It was
a hard-fought campaign, and I have
gained respect and admiration for him,
Rosen says. Tbday the two are friends
and often play squash together. Levin
spoke at Rosen's investiture.
