Include 'Ghetto'
Sweetie, a dark comedy
about the bizarre rivalry be-
tween two very different
sisters, headlines the Detroit
Film Theatre of the Detroit
Institute of Arts' April
schedule. Screening dates are
April 6-8.
On April 13-15, To
Beautiful For You, a comedy
about a businessman who is
married to Carole Bouquet (of
those Chanel No. 5 commer-
cials), yet finds himself drawn
instead to his plump, plain
new secretary.
Mr. Hire, a film by French
director Patrice Leconte,
comes to the DFT on April
20-22. Adapted from Georges
Simenon's novel, this film is
a mix of mystery and
claustrophobia.
The film Yaaba will be
screened on April 27-28. Win-
ner of the International
Critics Prize at the Cannes
Film Festival, Yabba (grand-
mother) is a tale of a young
African boy's friendship with
an old woman who's been re-
jected by her village.
Closing the month is a one
day screening of Lodz Ghetto,
on April 29. This controver-
sial film is built around rare
images of the ghetto in Lodz,
Poland, where 200,000 people
were put to death. The distur-
bing words of the ghetto's
Nazi-appointed leader Morde-
chai Chaim Rumkowski are
spoken by novelist Jerry
Kosinski, who was born in
Lodz and lost his family there.
