Howard Larky, 15, of Oak
Park has won Michigan's
first boys' division Young
Referee of the Year award
from the Michigan State\
Youth Soccer Association
(MYSA), placing him in
competition for the national
honor from the United
States Soccer Federation.
The national winner will
be announced in May.
A nearly straight-A stu-
dent at Berkley High School
who plays on its varsity
soccer and junior varsity
basketball teams, Larky is
"equally at home officiating
the under-8 age division to
the senior over-30 games,"
according to Guenter
Loepertz, MSYSA youth ref-
eree administrator.
"He is consistent and
respected whenever he of-
ficiates," Loepertz said. "For
a teenager, Howard com-
mands great respect for his
technical knowledge of the
soccer laws and for his
handling of the game."
He said Larky invariably
receives high praise from
coaches and "he is a good
role model and has en-
couraged other teenagers to
become referees."
Larky works through the
Royal Oak Soccer Referees
Association, which nomi-
nated him. MSYSA has
about 1,000 teenage refer-
ees.
The Oak Park youth is a
captain of his Detroit Mac-
cabi Club soccer team and a
member of the Michigan
Celtics soccer team, Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek
and Rose AZA.
